I would advise preboOking the Vatican and colosseum even at this time of year. Apart from that I would do plenty of research into what you want to see and do it at your leisure. Spend time wandering and getting lost in the city as I think this is how you find little gems to have a coffee and watch the world go by.

I would re commend downloading rick steves audio books - free with wonderful tips. The Vatican if you plan on visiting will take the bones of a day including the climb to the top of st peters basilica. There is also a shortcut out of the sistene chapel to st peters which saves you valuable time and energy!

Trevi fountain at night is fab. We found that we saw pretty much what we wanted in a leisurely fashion and not pressuring ourselves. HTH and enjoy!

Edit to add... Avoid heels as the cobbles are treacherous and opt for wedges if you need heels. The Italian women deserve massive recognition for their ability to walk without killing themsevels on the cobbles! And on a similar subject shopping is amazing there!
