Bit of a pickle with a producer.

So, last Tuesday I was given a producer for Tax & Booking NCT when I was in Dublin. As I hadn't received the logbook due to not being able to contact the seller, I used the form RF100A to tax it but the tax office would not tax it due to the VLC not being in my name and the NCT being expired.

The Garda that gave me the producer said a text or email for the NCT would suffice. I went to my local station where I said I'd produce it and explained to the Garda behind the counter what the story was and showed him the email for the NCT to which he replies "I can't take that, it needs to be the actual cert when it is NCT'd, so as soon as you have it bring it in so the Garda that gave you the producer doesn't end up issuing a summons."

Why the hell did the Garda tell me a text will be fine if it isn't?

I also explained why I hadn't got the VLC yet either and the tax office weren't happy to tax the car, even though the Gardaí were happy to stamp and sign the RF100A and the Garda just says "Well, if you haven't got it, you can't produce it, it's not the end of the world, just bring it in when you have it."

I asked him can he at least give me something to say I was in and explained things so as to cover myself 'til I have the VLC and tax done and he says no.

Not happy with this I went out to the station where the Garda is based that gave me the producer and same thing there. "I dunno when it was given to ya, I dunno who gave it to ya, I need the actual Tax & NCT cert to put it into the system for that Garda to see it."

So on thursday (9th day of the producer) I got the VLC and a bonus of an online Tax renewal form with a pin. When I logged in it had on it what I had filled on the RF100A anyway, the back tax owed for the month of Feb and then 3 months tax.

Paid it then and there and printed the page. No bollox of needing NCT details. Took the sheet to the Garda station and they wouldn't even take that! The tax disc most likely wont be here 'til Monday or Tuesday. NCT is on 15/3/'12 as that was the earliest date.

So, should I send a registered letter to the Sergent of both stations to nip this in the bud now and avoid a summons? Any suggestions? If I am summonsed how long does it take or is it dependant on the Garda?

My guess is if I am summonsed it'd be for no Tax, no NCT and failing to produce?

The Garda has my Address and Phone number but I didn't think to take his details/badge in case I didn't get things sorted before the 10 days and he hasn't contacted me yet to see why I haven't produced.

Hang on, last Tuesday was the 6th and you've ten days to produce, no? Go online and find an NCT cancellation for Monday and you'll have everything you need to produce within the 10 days. And just for future reference, you don't need an NCT to tax a car and you don't need the VLC to NCT one. :)

You do need the vehicle registration cert to NCT a car. Well you are supposed to have it with you. How strict they are on this depends on the actual test centre

Not Tuesday gone, Tuesday last. 28th. I have the VLC now, but only since 2 days ago. I was able to book the NCT online no problem once I had the date of 1st registration of the car but to actually NCT it, I need the logbook on the day.

If you're using the form RF100A they ask for proof of certificate of road worthiness.

I was lucky because I got an online tax renewal letter when I got the VLC so I was able to tax it in a matter of minutes. However, when I brought an RF100A to a tax office, signed and stamped by a Garda station, they wouldn't take my money to tax it because the car had no NCT and the VLC still wasn't in my name at the time.

Yeh they sent me 2 reminders saying I'll need the VLC and my license or the car wont be tested.

I have everything sorted now, and there was nothing I could do about the time frame I got it done in.

I could have arsed about and tried getting it declared off the road for the month I was using it before the book was in my name, but I'm not. I've paid the Arrears aswell as 3 months tax.

What I want to avoid now is a summons.

I'm aware that they say that they need the VLC for the NCT, but my experience has been that they never ask for it. You can also be pretty certain of getting an NCT for the following day, if you spend a bit of time online looking for last-minute cancellations. They did ask for my license last time, but that was a first and I didn't get the impression that it'd be a deal breaker.

Re the VLC, was it not filled out with the seller and posted when you bought the car?

I'd still produce the NCT cert and tax disc at the nominated station ASAP - without the name of the Garda who stopped you it's about all you can do now. If a summons does arrive then you can contact the Garda who issued it and see if they'll agree to have it struck out.

Yeh I think that's the best option. In the back of my mind I keep thinking maybe the Garda was just trying to use scare tactics because this all happened in a private car park.

I wasn't even near the car when they came in, my GF was in the passenger seat and called me.

At the end of the day, I got everything sorted as soon as I could.

I didn't get to fill the VLC because the previous owner lost it. Luckily enough I knew ther past owner so wasn't too worried.

Managed to get another book by a friend in the trade and he put the car through the garages name and into mine.

Albeit time consuming but got sorted and I explained this to the Garda.

Yeh there was no problem booking the NCT. Unfortunately there was only 3 cancellations that suited me so I just booked a date that suited me. Too busy in work to mess about squeezing in NCT so I catered it around work instead.
