Can anyone tell me if using a plug in a car tyre is safe. I know they say not to but is that to cover themselves. I used them on my motorbike a few times and never had a problem.

I'm using one at the moment in a front tyre and done nearly 1k miles on it. I haven't noticed anything unusual, and the tyre pressure remains the same. I am keeping a close eye on it though and plan to get two new tyres soonish.

It should be OK in the thread area but not in the shoulder or side-wall. I know that a plug is classed as a temporary repair, but once upon a time it was the only type of repair done on tubeless tyres.

I'm confused, what else would you use on a tubeless tyre?

The fix that I am aware is a kind of combined plug and patch. I've heard guys in the trade calling it a "mushroom" because of its shape. It consists of a plug joined to the centre of a patch. The tyre must be removed for the repair and the plug is pulled through from the inside until the patch is in contact with the inner surface of the tyre. The patch is stuck to the tyre with rubber glue just like an ordinary patch and the excess length of plug is trimmed off the outside of the tyre.
