    Depends, how much?
Accurate, but lots of problems with the magazines, there was a major recall for the 17 version, and a lot of people lost money as a result.

I would get a 10/22 ruger , should be able to get at around 450 new.

I have exactly the same rifle and scope, I really like both. I use the Federal 550 Value Pack (1,260 fps 36gr plated HP), it does 1" - 2" at 60yd with the budget ammo. I can do better with more expensive stuff. See link above, there were problems with the first generation magazines. I have a 3rd gen magazine and it works fine. I have approx 1,000 rds through it without any failure to feed. Here in USA you can get the 10 rd mags for $12. If getting a new mag in Ireland is a big deal, you might stay away from it. However, if its the mag and you can replace, then may be ok deal. I'd be interested in knowing when he bought the rifle or when it was made.

For what its worth, Remington lists this guy as an authorized dealer:

One other idea occured to me. It may not be practical for you. If this is a big investment, that is coping with the regulations etc require you to really look before you leap, then perhaps you could go ahead and buy a magazine, then meet the seller at a shooting club or suitable land with a box of ammo. Then see if the rifle shoots with a new magazine and the ammo you prefer. If it doesnt work, then maybe you could sell the magazine back through the gun shop or at a gun club, or on the local web page. The laws or the hassle may make my idea impractical, just a thought.

If the rifle is cleaned & lubricated properly, it should function ok with a good magazine. The initial bad magazines were plastic, new ones are aluminum. I agree if its not a high a price, then no need to worry too much anyway. Link below tells how to determine yr of manufacture. My 597 has a "D" for the year code which means it was made in 2009.

Remington site link below has a download for an owners manual if you need it:

A chap over on the Shooting forum found this dealer today who includes Remington, you might try them too. They look like a pretty good outfit to me (I guess there are still some legal gun outlets and shooting in UK after all.)

Good luck with the license! The local members here or the Moderators can assist you with the legal stuff and what is legal. I just tested some new ammo in mine today. I will try and post my Rem 597 shooting results over on the Shooting page since others here seem to have some interest in the rifle.

Ordered the Magazine this Morning through your contact in Galway they referred me to my local Gun Dealer which is when I rang the seller of the Gun and he went in with his Licence to order the Magazine for the Remington will take a couple of weeks the Galway contact said there waiting on them to come in Thanks again.

i had the newer, alluminium mag , still had feeding problems as the "staggered" method of stacking the bullets would get stuck , you had to take the mag out and give it a bang to get the bullets to pop up.

I think it is a problem that the 22 round does not lend itself to staggered stacking, all other 22 mags are stacked on top of each other.

    http://tfrwiki.midworld.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Remington_597_Modifications_Guide

Here is a link from UK with some good ideas on how to repair or adjust. I bench tested mine yesterday and published results on the Shooting forum. The trigger pull weight being as much as the rifle weight, and the blow back action makes bench testing a challenge. The rifle was designed for more practical applications, unless you get a heavy stock and/or bull barrel. By that time and expense I would be into a different rifle. The exploded view is gone, but you can just download the owners manual from the link in my earlier post for that. Happy shooting!

I would set it to 75 yards but as Dwighet says 65 yards it makes little or no difference with either. Good hunting with it:)

Here is a typical 50-yd 10 shot group with CCI Mini-Mag 36 gr. Based testing so far, I recommend consider trying CCI Mini-Mag 36 gr Copper HP 1260 FPS, or the CCI SV 40 gr ammo if you can get it. Bullets are of high quality and loads are very consistent. My 597 really likes the stuff. With the zero range at 50yd, the drop at 100yd on mine is 8 in for the 1260 fps 36 gr.

Tawny, I've heard good things about the CCI Subsonic as well. Let us know how it does. I've tried several types now, mine seems to favor CCI.
