Machine gun fire

Following a house extension, relocation of the hot press and attic storage tank, there is a noise coming from the attic which resembles distant machine gun fire.
When the tank is almost full, it appears that the water pressure is causing the mains water pipe to the tank to vibrate.
Any ideas on how I could fix this?

There is a thing you can get called a water shock arrestor. It's a small pressure vessel and you tee it into the mains pipe before the ball cock.

had this problem last week with a job I looked at for a friend , the cause was they had put in a new ball cock and valve and the hammering started . caused by a cheap valve . swapped it for an equilibrium water valve znd it solved the problem . €15 in ph ross
