I remember I bought the Punto Sporting new in 2002, It was like a rocket, 80 hp and was light, but had a great gearbox and milked every bit of torque from the engine, it could do 50 mpg when driven easy enough. I missed it after. Completely different from the bog standard 1.2 60 hp punto's as they had no poke at all. Though I was driving an old skool 1.9 tdi VW caddy, no turbo at the time lol

This punto abrath evo though is really eye catching and I still have the pictures open, why can't the Germans make something so nice looking ? I mean is it me or is V.W's attraction really the badge ?

Well I don't know about anyone else but I'd much rather be behind the wheel looking at that dash, than trying to reassure myself the Polo or Golf was the better buy, hoping people see the V.W badge.

That's a car I would actually be glad to go out and polish every Sunday, even my brother a Die hard Audi fan really likes it, but of course wouldn't be caught dead in a Fiat, even though it's got 30 hp more than his A5 boring Diesel!

It's a real shame the Government completely ruined motoring in Ireland and want us driving the most powerless crap imaginable, the cost of petrol makes this car only possible for only shorter driving. Makes my prius look like a freaking spa mobile!

I think 37 mpg is the official combined, bit I bet 40-45 could be achieved!

There is a 178 hp version I think, not bad!

A car like that is only viable at about 5 years old plus. Someone is going to pay silly money on it new (although most likely it will be the importer) and it will sink in value like a stone until it becomes practically worthless. I'm sure it's a nice car and reliable enough too but in this country no one will want it.

If you do buy it let me know if you are selling it in 2017 and it will make a nice run about for the the back roads.

Years ago i had a Uno Turbo and boy can it go when the turbo kicks in. Pity it wasn't too keen on the bends as i found out on a wet night. :o

Sure mid 30s combined isn't bad at all :)
(doesn't take a Punto Evo Abarth to make a Prius look like a .... :pac: )

Yeah you are right, though all cars de value. You will pay a fair bit more for a GTI Golf Or seat Leon, the GTI golf is 35-40 grand ? The polo GTI I can't even find any more on the Irish VW site!

I know the Golf is in a different class, but seriously who could prefer the boring golf to the Evo Abrath in the pics above ?

Incredible really - a good looking small turbocharged sporty hatchback -and mpg is the first question asked about it.

p.s. What's the road tax on it? :D

HAHA yeah the Prius is as ugly enough, but it's a great car and a decent size, but it would never be as nice to sit in or drive as the Abrath!

35-40 mpg is not too bad if you are not doing over 12000 miles or less a year, at that rate you could afford to have a little fun.

Over 66 kms today I averaged 4.3 l/100 kms that's 65.69 mpg, so no one can say hybrids are useless or diesels are better, I used to think that way.

But I'd still rather drive the Abrath any day if only petrol was cheap again! :(

I nearly cry every time I fill up knowing that 70 + % of the tank goes to the Government!

Road tax is 333 I'm almost sure, I pay nearly 400 for the prius all because it's an 07, still cheaper than the nearly 600 the Audi cost!

LOL you can service it yourself!

Do what my neighbour does, get the cops to sign an off the road form all the time in different barracks, tell them that it just looks so good you just want to look at it and not drive it! :-)

Fecking loved the Unos. Great little car and the FIRE engines were little crackers.

It's a well known fact that NOBODY services their Punto as it will just break down anyway :p

    Fix-It-Again-Tomorrow F-I-A-T :D

Ah I think they are no worse than most cars these days, they have come on leaps and bounds, the punto I had in 02 was a cracking little thing, and way more reliable than the fecking nightmare of a 02 TDI Passat I bought a few years later! The Punto looked better inside than the dreary passat and was actually a lot nicer to drive despite its bone shattering suspension. The passat rattled like hell and was like a barge in the bends, went through 2 front shocks and 2 cv joints in the one year I had it, didn't really improve the handling.

The New model caddy van I bought went through a wheel bearing and twin mass flywheel at 15,000 kms! Nightmare!

the fecking nightmare of a TDI Passat

    Now you're speaking my language.

I'm only joking about the Punto. If serviced and cared for they are fine

That's it, a lot of people don't care for their cars, or can't afford to.

I had a couple of Punto GTs and a Coupe 20v Turbo.

Quick cars, but all struggled putting the power down with FWD, even the Coupe which had a viscous coupling (whatever that was).

Reliable cars, but build quality wasn't a strong point. After 20k miles, they all rattled like a sack of spanners.

They are much better now with softer touch plastics they don't rattle nearly as much, my 02 punto had a lot of hard plastics that did rattle.
