Is it any use for a student looking for part time work? I've applied for a good few positions and nothing, including positions I've got plenty of experience in(retail) I suppose the question is not so much is jobs.ie any use, but if applying online is a waste of time?

What I dislike - It does not give you the email address to forward a CV.

I submitted many CVs without success.

Are you tailoring your cover letter for each job you apply for, or are you using a generic template?

Have you got someone to check over both your cover letter and CV to make sure it is formatted well and there are no spelling or grammar mistakes?

The biggest problem for jobseekers at the moment is the amount of people applying for each job, so you want to make sure your job application is a) better than the average job application and b) stands out from the crowd. A good cover letter is the best way to do this.

I've applied for probably 100 jobs on that site in my life and only ever 1 interview

Http://kiosk.fas.ie is really good depending on where you're living

Your query has returned 4008 jobs. Please refine your selection to bring the results to under 300.

    World's worst job website.

In the process of going through CV's for a relative's business. Can I just say, please use spell check !!Thats what its there for. Secondly, if you have moved adresses , do print out a revised CV , its absolute laziness to put a handwritten label over your old address especially when you go on about your excellent computer skills. And finally, if you are told to only apply if you meet the criteria outlined in the specification, only apply if you meet the essential criteria, eg no use applying with a degree in linguistics if the position advertised for is for nursing.

I've been checking the FAS website forever now and I never knew you could get that online, thanks!

You probably never went into a FAS office before, this is what you see on their machines in their offices. Just needs too much filtering to get it under 300 results. I wish they would have a 'Show All' button for each county, or tick boxes. Daft having to go through all the Dublin postcodes. People are prepared to travel to more areas.

I have used the following websites, jobs.ie, recruitireland, jobrapido, fas irishjobs.ie publicjobs.ie and have found jobs through them so its not a complete waste of time:D I used to check newspapers too,
what jobs I think have been a complete waste of time are any of those ones that require you to send your cv to a box no: they wouldnt tell you where the job is so god only knows where your cv is going with all your info..!!!

just make sure you answer the questions online to suit each role because if you have a general cv and no covering letter for different roles then you might be overlooked by the recruiter:(

What annoys me about jobs, I've seen a job I applied to put up that the job is available 3 times in last week, and not even a reply!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭EdenHazard

*Question, should yo do anything more once they reply with the standard 'we will contact you soon' email they send out?

I'm in the same boat. I applied for jobs last summer while I'm off college but would be lucky to even get a reply email. I think its hard to get a job as it is in this current recession and I think its even harder for a student who only wants a job for 4 months of the summer. From an employers perspective why would they give a job to a student short term when they could get someone permanently. I'm expecting to have the same hassle this summer.

    Lads quick question.

I'm just starting back looking for work and I applied for 3 jobs there though jobs.ie, now I got a confirmation from one....does this suggest that jobs.ie didnt think I was suitable for the other 2 or that the company didnt set up an automatic response....

just wondering because I could have contacted the companies directly had I known this was the case...

edit: i received confirmation from the other 2 companies now, all good :)

The Op asks if jobs.ie is any good for part time work - the answer there is no but then as far as I'm concerned jobs.ie is useless for full time work also - I strongly suspect that many of the positions advertised do not exist.
The fact that jobs.ie also carries numerous ads for Direct Marketing cowboys does not instill confidence.

Which Irish job listings are of better quality (i.e. actual jobs)?

Id apply to all of them, sure what have you got to lose bar time. That's my angle anyway!

    Hiya Eden
If your just looking for part time work I suggest you hand your cv into Dunnes and Supervalu etc. Many of these stores are only taking people on temp (6 months contracts) and then let them go and re-hire. I know its not great but its something.

I agree. Not applying will 100% definitely result in you not getting the job, whereas if you apply you have a chance...

This. Over the years I must have applied for a hundred jobs + on jobs.ie and maybe had one interview. Others don't even bother to respond other than the generic email you get when you apply.

My old man did get a job from jobs.ie though - a surveying job, not the sort of job most would be willing to do.

I've had more interviews and success with gumtree believe it or not. I've gotten 2 jobs via ads placed on gumtree and a couple more interviews. :)

Gumtree has been a hidden gem for me jobswise.

Interesting to hear positive things about Gumtree , I've always had a very negative view of it as I've always thought of it as full of idiots and scammers.
Must take a look at it again.......

Contact the recruitment body as it is illegal to false advertise and get a spot inspection to them.

    That might stop them.

What annoys me as an ex recruitment consultant is that they now say "if we have not contacted you in 21 days assume you are unsuccessful"

I worked in a candidate driven market when you got all your leads from candidates and they were a great way of finding out what was happening in the market, it will return to those days and then those fools will call you and look for your business then or try to place you.

At present they are being short sighted in not seeing the possible leads that the candidate can give.

In fairness, posting on a forum is not quite the same as applying for a job. :pac:
