    I'm paying just over €1000 on a 05 525d.no idea about reliability on a 99 one

Tax is €1005, at that age reliability will be almost entirely down to how it's been looked after. I'd be expecting mid 30s?

33.4 mpg on an 02 525d over three years of city and once a week country run. Tax as above. Problems were prop shaft coupling (couple of hundred) and engine mounts (couple of hundred) over three years. Otherwise rock solid and a great car. I'd happily have it back. Oh and the radio display will die, if it hasn't already.
