A tablet is never going to have the functionality of a laptop... simple as that.

If you want a fun device for browsing / e-mails / playing mini games.. get the tablet.

If you want to be able to do all that, and more... get the laptop :)

What's the spec on the dell? Is it just a Inspiron 15?

Tbh, the ipad would be great for browsing on the go, tablets in general can get a bit tedious at times to use. But for carrying around they're great. I don't have an ipad, but I have a HP touchpad and I carry that around everywhere and it's great because of it's 8/9 hour battery.
That laptop is a desktop replacement tbh, big, poor battery life, acceptable performance, but it is a Windows machine so you'll be able to do a lot more. It all comes down to what you want out of it.

it really is down to what you want to do with it, ipad is perfect for browsing on the move.
Why do you want to upgrade from your current netbook?

And if that laptop is good enough for you want comes back to what you want, personally I be looking to get something a bit better.

I think a laptop should be the main thing in house or whatever, a tablet should be a luxury for browsing when you feel too lazy to sit somewhat properly :P :P

iTunes is quite demanding. If you want a good experience with that, I'd spend a little more. Are you limited on budget?

It seems like a bargain, but those processors are very outdated now...

I would be looking for something with an i3 processor, you will spend that bit more, but it will last you that bit longer... :D

As sync said, I would be looking for an i3 processor as a minimum.
    you could also try laptopsdirect.ie

you are talking around €500 up for a decent laptop at the moment imo.
At the rate software is developing and getting harder to run low end/budget laptops will have a very short life before they are"too slow" If you can its worth going up in spec a bit.

    You don't want a Celeron B800, believe me. ;)

60 or 70 Euro more should easily buy you a Core i3 system.

Same goes for the iPad 2, why settle for a refurb when you can buy it new for a few yoyos more.

    Sorry, didn't see this post.

Yes, something like this will do. People buying laptops with a Pentiuam/Celeron processor, or worse, AMD E-Series really save at the wrong end. If you don't need a discrete GPU (Intel HD3000 is good enough to play full HD Video), you shouldn't spend more than 450 on a Core i3, HDMI out is a nice bonus if you want to hook it up to the big screen.

Mind you, these are ALL first generation Core i3, they're not Sandy Bridge CPUs.

You can tell a 2nd Gen from the model number, i.e. Core i3 2330M as opposed to Core i3 370M.

So, go look around again. :)

    Here's a MSI 2nd Gen Core i3 w HDMI out for é489

    Passmark Score for the 2330M: 2741 (370M: 2245)

And the Sandy Bridge processors have better graphics (integrated) than the older Nehalem chips.

Most certainly, 2 Gen Core i3 and 6 GB RAM is a good deal there. No detailed specs that I can see, so I don't know if it has HDMI out (if that's important for you). Otherwise it's the best you have been posting so far. ;)

A half decent laptop is better than any tablet.

That price is right... unless you want to go shopping abroad (US, Far East or Germany) you wouldn't find much better offers.

DELL for example is asking for 459 but you'll only get 3 GB RAM.
