AP2 & Project X shaft

Hi. I'm thinking about changing my Titleist DCI 990 irons. I'm interested in the AP2's. I read somewhere that the "original" AP2 was just as good, if not better, than the current set. To be honest, the current would be well out of my price range. So I have a few questions, if someone would be informed & kind enough please??!!

    • I was looking on golfbidder.co.uk - they seem to have lots of sets from 2008: is this the one I am looking for? There also seems to be one from 2010, as well as current
    • What's the story with the project x shaft? Are the dramatically different to "older" shafts?
    • I have the S300 shaft (pretty sure that's what it is, though I think the word "gold" is in there too)
    • I like the stiffness of my current shafts, what would be the equivalent in the project x

If anyone had any useful info on the above I'd appreciate it. I'd be particulalry in hearing if anyone has changed from the DCI990 to the AP2. Or if the project x shafts are in any current model (of any iron now) that I maybe could demo somewhere to see what they are like, i.e. get to know what one suits me.

    Thanks.

In stiffness terms the px 5.5 would play the closest to the S300 but not in weight, the weight of the s300 is 15G heavier which was a noticeable diff for me, I go with PX 6.0 or Hardtepped S300s. Best bet is to go and hit the diff shafts with the clubs

My first official act as a forum member is to give a thumbs up to the AP2s! Bought a set myself in 2010 - when the four iron from my previous set of Zing 2s was nicked and proved irreplaceable. I have the s300 shafts in them. I'd definitely recommend the clubs; decent forgiveness and good distance. Only downside is that they're quite heavy, my set anyway, and that's not to everyone's liking. When you get down to the 3 and 4 iron the heads look a bit chunky at address too.

By the way, hello to everyone. I've been following the golf forum for a while and decided to make an honest man of myself! I live in Meath, in early 30s and a member of black bush golf club. That's all the info I'm prepared to give out without a court order.

    +1

I have the 2010 AP2's with px5.5's. I picked up 2 spare AP2 6 irons at a demo club sell off in American Golf (€5 each, a steal!) a month ago, they have S300 shafts. I could not believe how much heavier they are in comparison to the px shafts. The club feels totally different. And I had s300 shafts on my last set of irons. Far prefer the px's.

Re the new AP2's, my pro got a set of them to try and said there's sfa difference, just more marketing. Same with the original 2008 ones. They're a lovely iron.

Thanks for the replies. I'm in a quandary now, spoke to our club pro and he was saying you really have to demo the clubs to know which combination of shaft and clubhead is right for you. That leaves the option of second hand clubs in question. The last thing I want to do is to buy a new (to me) set of irons and have any doubts about their suitability to me. Those marketing geniuses really have done their best to get you to custom fit your clubs!!
