Found this Gannet in Bantry Bay this morning.Lots of what appears to be crude oil on its feathers. There was none on its beak, didnt seem to have tried to preen it off.Havnt heard of any oil spill around here lately. There wasnt any oil on the shore.Maybe the maritime forum might be a better place to post this.Mods move if you think so.

There would be oil tankers coming in and out from Whiddy Island, and these have a nasty habit of flushing out their tanks when they get just out of sight of land.

You should maybe report this to the NPWS?

That bird didn't get oiled when it was alive.
The head and neck are clean it looks like it died and floated arse up in an oily area.
If the bird was oiled while alive the whole bird would be covered not just above the waterline.
Tankers are pretty careful about flushing tanks around Bantry remember this is the site of the Betelgeuse disaster and there is a lot of Aquaculture in the Bay. Any fuel or oil would cause a large problem for Conoco as they have a compensation deal in place in the event of a spill.
