I'm new into the iPad market this time around. Would take more than an €80 reduction to make me buy an iPad 2 instead of the new one. Half price, I might think about it....

I think this is just the new RRP for the iPad 2. Pretty much everywhere should be the same price.

How is 311 good for an old model iPad?

And it's still a great piece of kit. Hasn't suddenly become bad because a better model is on the way.

From what I have seen the new model has a few extra bits and pieces but nothing to get worked up about. If it was 10% lighter or thinner then I think that would be significant.

As it stands the iPad 2 is a great piece of equipment.

Wait... you'd count a 10% reduction in weight or thinness as significant and dismiss a 2048 x 1536 screen as nothing to get worked up about.

where is cheapest to get one? i have a SN child and was told they were good.
would it be worth waiting a few weeks to see if they drop further?

General consensus is that the price drop there has been post the release of the New Ipad is it, so unless you can do a bit of bargaining on adverts or donedeal you probably wont get cheaper.

A resolution that high on a screen that small is pointless. The resolution is nearly as high as the 27 inch imac. Saying that, a small decrease in size or weight would be equally pointless.

I don't necessarily see it as a great advantage. It will look slightly better I think. From a technical point of view though yes it's great, but all it will serve to do in reality is reduce speed and battery life while keeping the price high.

Battery life is the same. And if you don't care about the Retina screen you can get the iPad 2 instead.

However, I wouldn't dismiss the Retina screen until you've seen it.

I've always been disappointed with the screen on the iPad2. For most tasks, games, photos etc. it's great, but the resolution coupled with the screen size and the way it renders some websites - of course this is part of the site's design problems - is really poor e.g. Chud.com I always find myself messing about with trying to get it to be legible. The reading experience I find brutal as well, loaded up the kindle app yesterday and gave up after a few pages.

Is there not a PC World Rep on here, could they give us a nod if the 311 euro price will be offered again?

Exactly, I switched from iPad 1 to the 2 just for this reason. Got my iPad 2 on Friday, well pleased with it. PC World in Tallaght still had a lot of stock in.
