I have not got a clue - You ever watch youtube videos of these scams??

They can insert sticky tape into the machine and it 'swallows' your card.

The fraudsters then come along and pull the card out and use it as normal.

Re. the Pin, someone either hovered behind me or there was a camera.

I usually always cover my pin number but i had a few drinks that night so maybe my defense was down...

    Absolute bummer

Sorry, when you said it went missing I thought you just lost it. I didn't realise you meant it was eaten by the ATM

I first read that as Lesbian Loop.

    Get onto the bank ASAP.

Still though, in all fairness its not hard to cover your habd when your entering your pin.

name and shame the dodgy atm

    bank name:
    Atm address:

this will help prevent other people on boards from getting scammed by the same machine

My "commiserations" bit of a nasty thing to happen but i assume the bank still cover it?

Also more of a general rule for everyone it might be worth reducing your limit (if you can). Alledegely they think the limit is reached if they can;t get a "large" amount

Again a sh*t thing to happen, i hope it all gets sorted quickly.
With a bit of luck they'll find the b*stads who are at this!

It doesnt really work like that, the fraudsters dont leave thier devices on the ATM. Typically they would target an ATM for about an hour or less, then remove thier equipment and move on.

Would be difficult I'd imagine. A few seconds of grainy night-time cctv footage wouldn't be alot to go on unless these guys are known to gardai already.

The scam is to superglue the money flap shut so the computer recognises the withdrawal but can't reveal the cash. You leave with no money assuming the machine is just not working. The scammer comes back with a knife, cracks the superglue and the money pops out.

It hasn't worked in about 10 or 15 years I'd say.

If OP is a women most likely someone shoulder-surfed her, followed her and when an opportunity arose stole her card (e.g. when eating in a restaurant with bag on the floor).

The skimmers on ATMs are far less common then shifty fingered thieves. And the skimmer doesn't swallow your card.

OP - is there a chance some one could have seen you enter your pin at an atm or a shop checkout somewhere and then picked you card / wallet from you ?? is there a change you could have put your atm card in to a loose jacket / back jeans pocket etc???thieves often use this tactic - sometimes one causing a distraction by bumping in to you while another pick pockets you from a different angle.

You should get sorted by the bank - might take a while though.

just saw seachmall's post above: oops !!

The permanent TSB machine on Henry St in Dublin ate my card recently, I went into the bank the next day and they said that they didn't have my card and it was probably a skimmer that took it  your wan who told me this was so nonplussed about it though, as if it happened all the time.

joke was on them though, I only had 86 cent in my account.

Usually, bank policy is not to compensate in cases where the customer's original card and PIN code are used, which seems to have been the case here. This would suggest that the owner of the account accidentally or deliberately revealed their PIN number of their own volition and perhaps did not exercise adequate diligence in securing their debit card.

This stuff happens all the time.

I just don't understand why people won't call the bank or the number on the ATM when it does happen, but instead shrug their shoulders and walk away.

do you use online banking? If you check account details online, it will show you where the account was debited.
