As the title says, we have an 18th month old Jack Russell who had a minor issue with weeping from one eye. Last night the vet told us she has cataracts! I would have thought this was unusual in such a young dog.
We also have a 16 year old Jack and she has cataracts but we have been advised that this is normal in such an old dog and to just leave well enough alone.

So what I am wondering is if anyone has experience of cataracts in such a young dog? What do we do? I understand it can be operated on, and she is insured by Tesco pet insurance - would that be covered? Had a read of the policy but it is vague - references to illness, injury and conditions but no specifics.

    Any advice/info gratefully received.

I don't know about Ireland, but I assume the cost of a cataract operation for a dog would be about the same as in Finland, where I have a dog. His eyes are OK, but a good friend's dog needed to have a cataract removed and it cost €1,500 for one eye. I also had a cataract operation at about the same time and had a choice of having it on the public health system, with a waiting period of maximally 6 months, for €300 or opting for a private hospital, with no waiting list, for €1,300 - of which the social insurance refunded €250.

It's a fair sum, but if you have it and it improves your best friend's quality of life, go for it.

As far as I know it's 1,700 per eye - another factor in why old dog did not get it done - too old for insurance and just can't afford it otherwise.

The young 'un's policy says it will cover up to 4,000 so hopefully...

How did your friend's dog get on?

The young 'un is an awful drama queen and we had a nightmare with her after she was neutered trying to get the buster collar off she tore open some of her stitches...

My dog had two cataracts removed with eye vet in dun laoghaire. Before your dog get the operation done a full blood test needs to be done I can't remember how much I paid but it was over €100 then pre tests Need to be done to Check suitability which takes a day they cost €450 and finally the operation for one eye €1800 which includes 1 follow up visit. You must go to vet 1 week after then two weeks then 1 month. I can't remember how frequently it is after that but each visit costs €50 but includes your drops! When we got the second eye done bloods or pre-tests didn't have to be done as it was 4 months after the first eye and it cost €1800 which included one follow up visit. As our policy had a €4000 limit we got the first eye done in one policy year and the second one in the next policy year. The first eye was a huge success but jury is still out on the second eye her vision is not great in it but hopefully it will settle done. I planned the operations when I had a week off from work as there are so many drops to put
    In the eyes.

Thanks Millem. Great info and advice on what it will entail.
