Setting Computer Profile in Windows 7?

Before Windows 7 arrived, there was a control panel item (in both XP and Vista I think?) for setting up your machine to specify what you wanted it to do e.g. Office, Gaming, Video work etc. I can't find any mention of this option in W7 Pro 64bit.

I did have Avanquest Fix-it installed, and this did give the option of setting up how the machine was to function, but I decided to uninstall it because it was slowing down boot-up and shutdown.

I do a lot of video work and file conversion, and with the machine not specifically geared towards this, it takes more than twice as long to convert a video file as it does when it is set up for the purpose.

Has anyone got any clues as to how this set-up can be achieved in W7?

For the life of me, I can't remember being able to do that natively in any version of Windows. It sounds like you were using some kind of third-party software.

Well in XP, if you right click on "My Computer" and go to Properties, Advanced Tab, there is an option to change the settings for system performance. I image this is tweaking much the same thing. I'm sure this is the same in Win 7

Wow the last time i remember seeing that was in windows 98.
It was probably there in XP alright.

It didnt actually do anything though as far as i remember.

Right click on my computer - properties - Advanced system settings - advanced (settings) about as close as you will get.

Are you talking about power settings in a laptop?

i know what you are talking about, setting win 98 as a laptop, desktop, workstation, etc, this was long done away with and replaced by better power management techniques, so these settings weren't necessary in later versions of windows.

the only reason you saw anything like it in xp or vista was because you had avanquest installed which probably had a similar plug-in included.

i take it you've upgraded your current setup from xp to windows 7?

would you mind posting up the current hardware spec so we could see what you are working with?

I initially built this on XP Pro, and then used the same set-up after a clean install of W7 64 bit when it was released.

I'm now beginning to think I dreamt the mysterious profiling.

    Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

    Asus P5Q3Asus P5Q3, P45, Socket-775, ATX, DDR3,
    GbLAN, Firewire, 2xPCI-Ex(2.0)16

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16ghz

    4GB Crucial DDR3 BallistiX 1333MHz 2GBx2,
    Non-ECC, 1.8V, 240pin, CL6-6-6-20

    Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB GDDR5
    PCI-Express 2.0, "VAPOR-X", DVI-I, HDMI, HDCP, 750/900MHz

    2 x 1.5 gb WD1500EARS Hard Drives

If W7 were that smart, I would have expected Avanquest's tweak to be un-necessary, but I know that it does make a difference. I think it must be down to a registry hack, or some other hidden W7 function. I've re-installed the Avanquest program and am trying to find out what it does.

you may not quite have dreamt it, as i know there was a function called 'hardware profiles' in xp that has been done away with in win7, but the hardware you listed there should be MORE than capable of handling and editing AVCHD files!

on my own laptop (im out at the moment, hence posting from mobile), its a standard spec core2duo 2.66, 4GB ram, intel mobile series 4 chipset graphics,win7x64, working with adobe premiere, it usually takes half an hour to render the finished cut from half an hours worth of video footage.

the only thing i can think of is suggesting you upgrade the ram in your machine, but other than that, just how long does it take you and what program are you using?
