DPF clearing

I know on modern diesels that they have DPF's fitted and that you have to drive for 20 mins or so above 2000 RPM every so often to more a less clear out the DPF

My question is, how often does this driving at 2000 RPM have to be done to clear the DPF ?
Is it once a week, once every 2 weeks, once a month etc. From looking around, it dosent really state the frequency needed to clear the dpf

e.g. if I was doing all city driving for a month solid and then drove a 120 mile trip on a motorway where I would hit the 2000 revs for over an hour, would this be enough to clear the DPF

Why get a diesel if you do all sitting driving bar a 120 mile trip per month?

Cause plain and simple, I like the low end torque of a diesel :)

I dont want this to turn in to a petrol V Diesel thread, just wondering on the above and the DPF clearing frequency

i had some issues with this dpf, i had to bit investigate .
All depends of how long on one trip engine is working. car set up dpf clearing itself, rising a bit revs and push from turbocharger, and bit more diesel from injectors.... causing a bit rough engine work, causing more heat. ... while it clear up.
if you doing very short trips, and switch off engine, while clearing procedure is on , on regular basis, it will block dpf , and warning light will be on. for me to clear that light, took twice go over all m50 on 4th gear. ... thats my experiance with vw polo 2011, 1.6 tdi. havent got yellow light since (month or so), but my wife still doing short trips. presume oce in month would be ok drive good distance with over 2 k revs.

other cars has special liquid to clear dpf, which needs to be topped up.

what car have you got ?

well, new diesels would be better use for longer distance, as that problem certainly will visit you for such short trips.

if money is not a big issue, there is companies, which take off dpf, upgrade exhaust system and chip ecu to get car work right without dpf. also more power comes with this, but in same time car emissions will be higher, not sure if itll pass nct, needs to be clear with somebody who knows that stuff.

my wifes polo exhaust pipe inside looks clean as it just from shops. ... that dpf clears soot very good.

I think I know the type of car you are thinking of.

There was some problems with the PD engine and DPF.

I have the CR engine and rarely go out of town now. Stop start even for short journeys.

Never yet saw a light on in the dash.

car has 21k kms on it and is 1.5 year old.

Vectra, I think you do know alright :)))
    Thanks for the input

I am also wondering in general though as to how often a car needs a good drive to clear the DPF

I assume it depends on how much is driven.

ie: More miles = More soot in the DPF = more 'regeration' cycles

how many miles it takes.... I've no idea.
Similar to Vectra, I've never noticed a cycle yet and have never seen any alert for the same on the dashboard (after 10k miles)

I normally drive mine once a week on a hour long drive and I never have had a problem.. TBH the DPF saga is grossley exagerated on this forum...

    well.
Must be 4 or 5 weeks since I drove to Cork and back (approx 20 miles each way)
Give it a run on those trips but since then I have only been on 5 mile trips once a week which does not let the car reach full operating temp to create a regen itself. Other than that it is stop start for me.. some of those being 200 meters or less.
I have no worries with the dpf. I have read it was on the PD engine the trouble was basically.
