Man dies after car collapses on top of him

A father-of-four has died after a car on which he had been working collapsed on top of him at his home in Co Clare.
Named locally as Jim Millane, the 54-year-old victim was a well-known, self-employed mechanic who was also very popular in motoring circles.

The accident happened at his home at Corlea, about 5km from Sixmilebridge. Mr Millane and his family had moved there in recent years from Doora near Ennis, where he lived and ran his own business.

Two units of the fire brigade from Shannon, along with an ambulance and rapid response advanced paramedic unit from Ennis responded to the incident.

Fire crews had to use specialist equipment to lift the car and release Mr Millane, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardaí have carried out a forensic examination.

The Health and Safety Authority sent an inspector to the scene yesterday.

It is understood that Mr Millane was working on a car in his driveway and that the vehicle was being supported by a jack.

It is expected that both investigations will look at whether the jack slipped or failed causing the vehicle to fall on the victim.

Mr Millane’s body was removed from the scene to the Mid Western Regional Hospital where a postmortem examination was due to be carried out last night.

Local councillor John Crowe said: "This is a terrible tragedy for the Millane family and the whole community.

"Jim was a very, very genuine, decent, jolly man from a very well known and respected family. The Millane’s have been in this area for generations. He will be an awful loss."

Mr Millane was also known for his involvement with the Clare Motor Club and did some rallying in the past.

A spokesman for the club said: "Jim was a great man to help out with a rally. He did a bit of rally driving himself for a while but you could call on him anytime to help out as a marshall. Jim was really a great man and he will be sadly missed."

He is survived by his wife Jacqueline and four grown-up daughters.

    - Poor guy.
    RIP.
Please be careful everyone. This happens all too often.
