Trying to decide between PC and Mac - thought this might be a good place to start! Looking for a basic model for home use, storage would be mainly for docs and photos. Also would love to know what people think about the time capsule device.

It's not really a great question to ask being honest. Your going to get a very one sided response here in favor of Mac. But i'll give you my 2 cents on it.

I think it all comes down to your needs. I had an iPhone and iPad and now that i've gotten a Macbook i'm really happy. It's a much easier to use OS and it works seamlessly with my devices. However your situation might be different and it could suit you better with Windows.

There aren't many Macs to choose from. Your price range will pretty much dictate which one you get. Have a look on the Apple Store.

Are you interested in a desktop or a notebook?

    Thanks for the replies.
Looking at the basic desktop model but wondering if 500gb is enough storage for 2 pepole using it for work/recreation.
Do you have to add a camera for Skype? Doesn't say in the store.
Can you put windows on to a mac to use both?
    Thanks

No, there's a built in camera.
And yes, you can dual-boot Windows, or run them side-by-side using a virtual machine.

They are overpriced and prone to problems. I've never actually used one though.

Very expensive, and, as the Professor says, they have been prone to issues - I've been terribly frustrated with mine - it is buggy and glitchy and I couldn't with confidence recommend one.

There are better external drives and better wireless base stations out there - combining them does not give you best of both worlds.

Thanks everyone! It's great to get opinions from people using/familiar with a device.

Time Machine works well on the Mac, but if you don’t want to pay the earth for the Time Capsule, try an Airport Extreme Base Station with an external hard drive - the Extreme’s power supply is separate, so it doesn’t run as hot (which is some of the Time Capsule’s issue), and you can choose your own hard drive, and upgrade it to a bigger one whenever you like.
