I seen him host The Panel. He is the opposite of funny.

Craig Doyle is not a comedian, but he is a complete joke, so I can see how it's easy to make that mistake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭dynamot

Craig Doyle and funny should not appear in the same sentence unless funny is preceded by 'not'

I was more interested in the opposite phenomenon, how do old comics lose their comic skill. I seen Jasper Carrot and gryff Rhyss Jones on new BBC comedy shows, both these were good in their day, but now its as if I heard the joke before, the same applies to even greats like billy Connolly.

Something gets lost and I don't know what that is.

Him off the upc ads? About as funny as accidentally walking in to a bollard that's perfectly bollock level.

I'd say when you get gigging and receive good reviews. Not have or host a comedy show. They're not comedians. They're hair-wobbling toff twats that talk about the size of packets of peanuts on airplanes and expect people to laugh because "oh! It's SO true! He's describing my life with a laugh track and a zany voice!".....and all his copycats (even that Scottish one who pretends to be risqué so people feel like they're going against the norm liking him...you're not...you're falling in to the trap! HA!).

    ...Um...where was I?

When they feel they need to stand on a stage in front of a packed room and ask people to laugh with them and/or to laugh at them.

    Very sad really. :(

He is a fairly mediocre host and presenter. Have never heard anyone describe him as a comedian.

Have to tip my hat to great comedians. Making people LOL must be tough. Why do you they get in to it? I think the best comedians provide social commentary via entertainment, so it's probably a vocation for many. There has to be real substance to the material for it to hit home. The best comedians highlight serious social issues through their material, and open them up for conversation which imo is a great public service. Genius really.

People are being a bit harsh on Craig. He just hasnt found the right vehicle. I'd suggest one that's speeding into an uncoming lorry!

    Now thats comedy!

He's funny, but the delivery is terrible.

    Seeing as we're sharing comics:

Yeah...I get his delivery. The 'self awareness' thing he's got going on. But he's no comparison to Stewart Lee or Dylan Moran. Tried to get in to the cd but it's just full of the stock "so my mother in law" jokes. I think I laughed once before it got very repetitive.

I'd even rate Demetri Martin over this guy (very quirky his show was hilarious "Important Things.." I think it was called).

(Hmm not one of his best...I've never seen this show before. But his other stuff is good. I swear!).

By American standards anyone could be a comedian. I was watching an episode of Seinfeld yesterday and I found it hard to believe how unfunny he was. The actual programme itself is funny enough at times but his stand up routine at the beginning and end is atrocious, like the majority of American stand up comedians.

The difference between a great comedian and the rest is a great comedian actually lives and is what they say. They don't study and research "material", they bring life into it. Billy Connolly would be a good example of this, I remember watching an interview with that tedious hack Eddie Izzard and he was saying how he couldn't research the source of Connolly's genius - that's cos he's actually funny laddie. OHO A MAN DRESSED AS A WOMAN LOL

I'm not sure. But it can't be that hard. There are 30 comedians in this thread.

To answer the OP, I believe a person becomes a comedian when they're not called Tommy Tiernan.

He looks up to them with the hope that he too can become one. Unfortunately, the odds are stacked against him, but he will make it before Sweaty Evans does.

I think a comedian has to have a natural ability for comedy or at least a likeability factor , Craig D has neither .... he cracks a joke ...

    ( pause for applause)

    then watch tumbleweed roll bye,

and Im not saying he's a bad guy but that Cd live just doesnt suit him.

More importantly, when does a comedian stop being a comedian?

Some stand up jokers should find this point.

When they say or do something really edgy or a lot of things a little edgy. Laughing is related (in an opposing kind of way) to fear i believe e.g. I laughed at death (but died anyway.. Like many a crap comedian.. And what do they do with the regular k?)

Some people will try anything to stay in a job. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing much funny about it either. Craig would be better to act his age.

Maybe he's spending too much time with invincible RTE celebs:o
