    Hi

I'm to look at a vw golf gti 2005 on saturday with dsg gearbox, never drove one of these before but what are they like compared to manual gearbox, probably easier to change gears anyway and are they reliable, 121k miles on it

    thanks

The oil in the gearbox must be changed every 60k kms if they have no proof of this walk away.

Our experience with them is that barring the odd mechatronic unit failure they are reliable once serviced. Look in the service history for the oil and filter change every 60k (kms) as posted above.

On the test drive take off from stationary and gear changes on the move should be very smooth with no jerking or hesitation. Any delay in reaction to throttle inputs or jerking when taking off can be signs of problems. Any surging when driving or jerky or noisy gear changes are also signs. Take a good long test drive if you can (20 minutes or so) as sometimes the symptoms don't appear until the gearbox is hot.

Edit forgot to say that while I think the DSG box is a great system I personally prefer the manual GTI but almost all of our customers with DSG GTIs love them so maybe it is just me.
