Renting a Car Rant- load of Spoofers

I am 29 and have a full licence for a good few years.

I don't have a credit card nor want one. They are debt buggies. I work in a Decent Law Firm in town so the office manager said charge it to the office card and then pay them back.

Budget - have an old woman in Roscommon who didn't want to know. She said that the credit card had to be in my name end of story. I explained that I would have the office pre-authorise the deposit in writing- no good. She then gave me the number of the manager in Dublin to ring- I left a message yesterday morning and today- not a thing back

Eurocar- These lads are a laugh- they own thrifty, irish car rentals and their own name. Their manager put me onto corporate- corporate wanted the Firm to register- the office manager did- Now they want to charge 100% more for the car rental through corporate than personal rental- ON THE SAME CAR ON THE SAME DATES. Mid range car - 2 days- personal credit card- 38 bucks- corporate- 80 bucks. She then said that online rates would explode at peak times and we would get a better corporate rate and quoted paddys- personal car for paddys- 4 days- I attached screen shot- 67 euro. Corporate price 160 Euro- Flat Lies.

Most other providers I can see are brokers- I actually had an Indian lady email me back when their website wouldn't take a booking for a lunchtime pickup and a I quote

    "Maybee they don't work 12:00"

    That was the entire response.

These dudes are a fooking joke- how do they stay in business ??

I want to rent a car in a company credit card. How hard can it be. Staffed by morons, lazy dopey, stupid ignorant idiots.

In case anyone thinks I am bad-mouthing in the wrong I have no problem sending correspondence to mods or anyone else that wants to verify the accuracy of these claims.

Lessons I've taken from using different car hire firms - always use Hertz.

+1 on Enterprise, they're the only crowd I ever use for month to month cars, or lead in stuff.

They also have good coverage nationwide.

I'm not a big fan of Hertz, have never found them to be particularly helpful.

    Or Cork either...:p

I was overwhelmed by their customer service. They collected me at home and took me to Cork to collect a car. I then dropped the car in Dublin when I was finished..

Yeah, Used them a few times.

Got an Astra, two Transits and an Insignia off them and have always been more than happy.

They didn't even give out to me for murdering one of the Transits.

I hired a car in 08 without a credit card. i had to take out the full insurance cover though which was understandable without a credit card. Budget I think it was and I had to pay up front and pay for a fuel deposit which was returned to me when I left the car back with full tank.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,798 ✭✭✭Mr. Incognito

Hadn't looked at them to be honest- I'll give them a shout tomorrow.

I don't want to give Eurocar any business after their bull today. I got so upset I actually started laughing, they were like no problem, register the company and then BOOM Corporate rates ONLY.

    To Hell with the buggers.

And we are talking tasty repeat business here in a top law firm. Greedy scum

Seriously, call Enterprise. They do Corporate stuff too, and rarely let me down.

I don't need neither want a credit card, so I don't have one.
However I have a MasterCard debit card, which is treated everywhere the same as credit card.
I always use, among other thing, for car rentals.

Generally yes - living without credit card is difficult, and renting cars without credit card is nearly impossible.
However in reality it doesn't necesserily need to be a credit card.

Yup, Companies have to sign up for a Corporate card for Rental company to have any contract with them.

Otherwise they have no formal agreement in the event theres damage etc.

Otherwise the employee has to take all the risk and then claim it back from the employer.

I've used Sixt and Europcar with a Corporate card without problems, turn up, give card + license and your off.

You can use a debit card, but you need to leave the excess as a deposit.

This works on a credit card becuase they hold the funds until you return the card.

How is the age of the Budget staff member relevant? Or the race of the lady working in the brokers?

And you reckon the staff are morons, lazy dopey, ignorant idiots.

But your justification for having no credit card is because they are debt buggies? I have two credit cards, for years and pay them both off in full monthly (if I've used them at all).

To me you come across in this thread as a racist, thick, tight, awkward numpty.

I have used someones age and race in a descriptive sense not in a derrogatory sense so get off your high horse.

So I should be an idiot and pay twice as much for something just because I'm told to??

If that's tight- yes - I am tight. And what is a numpty?? Is it related to a dumpty??

the main reason most of these car hires want a credit card in your name.. is very simple.... (and Enterprise should do the same, I worked with them for a long time a few years ago) is to reduce the risk of theft......

you hire the car in the corporate credit card.. you get fired and decide to keep the car .. who pays the bill??? seriously this stuff happens...

I remember a deal a bit similiar went askew, contract is in renters name, credit card in another name, renter dissapeared with car... owner of credit card said no more payments as the owner of the credit card didnt sign the contract... we had to recover the car from Switzerland...

**** like this happens all the time, so be understanding when these people are trying to protect their business....

Ugh ... the Person does, Corporate card is in your name, just work pays the bill.

Had an Amex Corporate (Useful for scraping Ice off the Windscreen in the morning) and a Visa Corporate card, never had a problem renting.

Just if you didnt submit your expenses in time you'd end up paying the interest and the billing cycle was from when you charged the expenses.

I totally understand the above points re fraud- it is the reason why the card has to be in your name- That is why i had to fill out the credit card authorisation form.

I offered to do this for budget and I was told my name only- end of story- brokers said they were not the company and couldn't accept it and the only company that accepted it then tried to jack up the prices.

I have NO problem paying in advance ANY security amount.

I have NO problem authorising in advance, in writing from work.

Budget flat refused to do it and the other crowd ripped me off.

re read the OP.. corporate card not in his name...

you never had a problem as they are in your name.. so if you went missing the car hire company can keep charging that card as your name on card and your name and signatures on contract..

well then offer to pay the value of the car.. and pay it up front.. if that the case...

they are not willing unless card in your name cause they obviously got burnt in the past...

    Jim,

I know you always speak your mind and admire you for same.

You may rub some people up the wrong way but your advice is normally sound and unbiased.

However I don't see the need for the above, especially the last sentence.

Part of the documentation you sign is to accept the condition the car is in before you drive off, the driver should thoroughly inspect the car along with the rental comapny staff befpre signing this.

I come across this a lot in work when I am travelling, and the accomodation is booked on a company card, and the hotel want the card on arrival.

Most companies have a process for this, that you have your company fax over authorisation (not sure what it involves) and that clears it, I'm off abroad for two weeks soon and that's exactly what they have done when they got the "the credit card must be produced on arrival" rhetoric

That aside, Entreprise are excellent to deal with as an individual, rent and claim expenses?

This might be a bit off topic here, but does anyone know why the minimum age to hire a car for most rental companies is 23? I'm 22, have had a full licence since I was 18, and I couldn't hire a car recently because of my age.

When i had to go to a hire place a few years ago and get a van for work the guy said i couldn't as i was under 23. He said it was something to do with maximum no claims bonus on your own policy or something like that( was a few years ago and memory is fuzzy).

How do you pay twice as much for anything? Do you know how credit cards work? You dont buy something and then the CC company looks for twice as much back on your bill.

i did not sign anything as the muppet who delivered the car to the garage was brain dead , left the form with the receptionist and went off . She gave me keys and docs which i did not sign.

Ah, that makes sense, as the max no claims bonus you could have is 5 years. So if you start driving at 17, include your 6 months compulsory learner permit, and driving test etc., that would bring you up to 23. Stupid though, some 23 year old with a full licence for only a couple weeks could get a rental car, whereas I have a 3 year no claims bonus and I can't get it :(
