What to ask for from insurance broker?

My insurance is up for renewal now and this year I've decided to actually go out and get a better deal.

Going direct to a few insurance companies web sites I've found it's pretty difficult to pit them against each other in terms of what they are offering etc. Each one has a standard offering that differ somewhat - it may include no claims protection or maybe it doesn't etc.

I spoke to a broker but they just gave me a bottom line number, didn't really specify at all what was included or wasn't. So I obviously need to be more specific in what I ask for.

What should you ask for to be included in your motor cover?
I drive a 4x4 about 10 years old, want fully comp. what would you ask for? What should I expect?

And finally, I don't know if this is ok or not but, are there any companies I should stay away from?

I would ask about the following: windscreen cover, breakdown assistance, what kind of NCB protection on offer (full, step back, none), 3rd party cover to drive other vehicles.

I can add that it's wise to check what are actual rules of brakedown cover, as it varies a lot between insurers.
Also good to check what kind of claims affect NCB (windscreen, fire, theft) as it's different with different companies.

Full cover for driving abroad might be important for anyone who is wishing to travel outside the country, and it's good to check how long do they offer it (can vary between 1 to 12 months per year).
