I found my old 10 speed racer in the folk's shed & would love to get it back to a working state. This bike hasn't seen action in almost 20 years so all chrome has rusted away & the frame needs to be stripped & sprayed.

Where in Dublin/Wicklow would be good for replacement wheels and pedals - or has technology moved on so much I'd be laughed out of the shop? I'm doing this on a budget so just the basics to get started would be great, thanks.

Most shops will laugh at you to be honest. There cutting off there nose to spite their face imo.

I'd imagine its running 27 inch wheels at the moment. If the break calipers have 4mm extra downward reach (this is due to 700c wheels are 4-5mm smaller then the old classic 27 inch) then a standard 700c wheels will fit. Depending on the age, the rear dropouts will either be spaced to 120mm/126mm. 126mm can be cold set to 130mm to accept a standard road wheelset but I wouldn't space a 120mm to 130mm.

If you don't/can't to change from a freewheel system with 5/6/7 gears to freehub-cassette system, then all you need is a freewheel hub and a nice new rim. Freewheel hubs are easily enough to come across.

Pedals will depends on the crank threads. French bikes used a different thread on pedals then the british system. If its an iso pedal, then any
    modern pedal will fit.

    Go for it :D

    Some useful resources

Any of Sheldons stuff is worth reading
    And parks tools stuff

Bee Cycles near Crumlin is a good place to for older stuff. Dara is a sound chap.

Stick some photos up too. I spend too much time looking at old bikes for my own good :D
