Printer Sharing Problem using XP and Windows 7

    Hi guys,

Having a bit of a printing issue.

I have a HP Laserjet 1320n attached to a desktop running window XP on my work network.

The problem arises when I try to print on this HP using the other PC's in work, which are running on Windows 7.

After hunting about online I managed to get this setup, adding the printer as a Local port first as recommended on various other forums, and then putting in the name of the PC the printer is actually attached to

The first print works fine after adding the printer, but when I go to print another document out later it will not print. The only thing that works is to delete the printer, and then re-install it through the local port settings as above.

Is there anything else someone can suggest? As it works the first time I'm at a loss as to why it will not print subsequent documents without re-adding the printer.

Is it possible to have the printer either wired into a Windows 7 machine, or to the network itself?

Thanks for the reply but unfortunately its no on both counts.

The Windows 7 PC's are rack mounted PC's in a separate server room, and as the printer does not support true network printing it has to be attached to a machine.

The XP machine is the only one that's not rack mounted in a separate room as its used for burning CD's

Always the way lol, what drivers are you running on the Win7 machines? Universal PCL or specific?

I'm using a PCL one, I had tried using specific ones but they wouldn't work on Windows 7.

I've been torturing the boss to buy a decent printer so none of this would happen but as with many bosses I get the old "deal with it"

Did you try the latest drivers from HP's website? And the correct version, 32/64bit? (sorry if this offends-don't how much you do/dont know :P)

    None taken!!!

Yeah its straight off the HP website. Even some of their own PCL drivers wouldn't work in the first instance.

I had started off trying a HP LJ1320 PCL5 and couldn't again work out why it wouldn't work. Eventually succeeded with a HP LJ1320 PCL6. Thought I'd cracked it and then this problem rears its head!!

If windows firewall is turned off this can happen when sharing printers.

Thanks for the reply NeoRox. Just checked and Windows Firewall is turned on

The PCL6 always gave us major hassle in work, for a period of months I was dealing with calls for laserjets and nearly every single one was resolved by firing back to PCL5 lol.

But yeah, I can't do much more from my end sorry, would need to see what I'm doing and play about. Have a look in this thread though, its a bit dated but then so is your printer :P

    Good luck.

Is it enabled on the windows 7 machines too and is file and printer sharing turned on in the rules and in Network and Sharing center ?

Cheers for that Scogar. I'll have a hunt about that. And if it was only printer that was dated in here I'd be laughing!!!

It's yes to all of those NeoRox. It's the fact that i can print from the Win7 machine once I set up the printer, but when trying to print the 2nd document it fails and needs reinstalled.

By printing the first time, you'd think that it should work every time after that.

when you say fails to print does it print garbage or print nothing at all? you could look to see if HP have a generic LJ driver, pretty sure they do.

don't suppose the pc the printer is attached to is on DHCP or something? maybe the IP is changing or someone else is picking up that IP.

when you set up the printer on the W7 machines do you go
ctrl panal - hardware - devices & printers - Add Printer - add local - then select create new port - standard tcp/ip then bang in the IP of teh XP PC?

what about if you hit Start - and in teh Search programs & files option you put in \\XPPC_Name pr \\XPPX_IP and hit enter, from there you should see a list of shared folders and attached printers, right click the printer and select connect. this assumes you've actually shared the printer to everyone on the X machine

    Hi Faolchu,

It prints out nothing at all. When I open the device queue it just states there is an error in printing.

The XP machine it is attached to has a static IP on the work network.

When adding the printer I do a mixture of your 2 suggestions. I go as far as create new port, and then enter the name of the printer on the network using \\AdminPC\hpLaserJ

    Faolchu.......1000+ internet points to you.

I tried using solely your 2nd method and it seems to working a treat!!

    Many thanks

Forget adding it as a local printer and add it as a network printer. see if the the add printer wizard will find it. It should if its set a shared printer on the xp machine.

and you were sorted while i was typing.

no worries mate found that second option works a treat with any problems i've had. you just install the drivers locally if it asks you and more often than not your sorted
