My 1997 E200 seems to get through the first half of the tank far quicker than it used to and there is a smell of petrol when I exit the car. Any ideas?

Well for x1 i wouldnt be driving it until its checked.

I have seen a cracked fuel pipe on a Ford Focus result in the car going up in flames at a set of lights.

    Get it checked out immediately.

Bung could be worn under the carpet, try the boot and see are there any bungs out, probably fine to drive just keep the window open, I'd say it's a bung and exhaust gases are getting in. Happend to me a few times in different cars.

This wouldnt really account for the largew consumption of petrol at the beginning, i.e. When I fill her up, the first half of the tank seems to go faster than it used to. It may be where the petrol cap is? Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated.

This was happening to my uncle's car last year. Seem to remember it being the fuel injector being leaky and spraying petrol around the inside of the bonnet. The fumes were coming in through the air conditioning vents!

Lift up the rear seat base and you will see a round plate screwed into position, remove this to reveal the fuel pump, check the seal and surrounding areas for spillage/leakage.The movement of the car could cause it to overflow and leak but only when the tank is full, also check underneath car for small pools.I had a similar problem on my A4.
