Where do you put your bike??

I've thought about this for a while, and every time i turn up at an event it annoys me even more. Has anyone any thoughts on it?

When i travel to a race/sportive, the bike is transported on either the roof rack or the rear rack. However, in the car park, there is always bits to do with the bike ie pump tires, load up bottles, attach numbers etc. Only small things but necessary all the same. The irritating thing for me is that in general, when the bike comes off the rack it has to lean against the car and possibly damaging the car paint, or left against a wall, though not if your parked in a field, which may cause damage to the bike if it falls over. What do you do? Do you bring a separate workstand just to stand the bike on? (as if there's not enough crap to bring). It's the same with the MTB, trying to clean it down at the trail car park with the bike lying on the ground is a pain. This is something i'm researching for a project, so any opinions are welcomed.

I wouldn't lean it against the car in case the car scratches the bike!

In fairness you would need to be pretty heavy handed to scratch a car or bike, by simply leaning a bike against it.

I dunno, maybe you have an exquisite car. I drive an old VW that is on its last legs. There are lots of scratches on it, none are from having leaned my bike against it.

I don't have an old car, but I'm not particularly precious about it. The bike leans against the car using the saddle and bars = no chance of scratching. Generally though I leave the bike on the rack and don't start setting up till about 15 minutes before I'm actually heading off. If I need to get anything out I can use the back doors and reach into the boot.

couldnt you just leave it on the rear rack for pumping tyres, attaching numbers, attaching bottles etc...
