Lucan GP 24th March

    Hi,

The Lucan GP, promoted by LCRC, Stagg Cycles and Hunky Dorys will be held this year on Saturday 24th March. The course will be the same as last year, however after taking on board some feedback we have made some changes to the A3/A4 Races, namely we have combined the A3/4's as last year the A4 Race was run over 2 laps (23miles) and there were complaints this was too short. This year the A4's will get a few minutes start over the A3's at the longer distance which should make a good attacking race.

The course is the 'Green Sheds' for anyone who rides the interclub league. For anyone unfamiliar with the circuit it is mainly flat / rolly and very fast with only a few drags.

Tea and Coffee with snacks will be served at the prize giving ceremony afterwards in Blackhall Gaels GAA Club. Please note the club will not open until after the A1/2 Race so please do not leave any items in the hall if you do not intend to wait until the prize ceremony.

We are having some difficulty with the club website so for now please feel free to ask me any questions or keep an eye on irishcycling.com for updates.

    Details as Follows;
    • Start / Race Parking - Blackhall Gaels GAA Club, Batterstown, Co. Meath
    • Sign On Open at 9.30am
    • First Race off at 11am Sharp
    • Race Starts Outside GAA Club
    • Race finishes on new Trim Rd / Dunshaughlin Link Road (R125) 1 Mile from Roundabout
    • One Day Licences will be available
    • Racing for all categories, A1, A2, A3, A4 and Juniors

    A1/A2 Combined Race
    4 Laps, 45 Miles / 73kms
A2's will get a small handicap
    Prizes for 1st 6 over line, plus 1st 3 Unplaced A2's

    A3/A4/Junior Combined Race
    3 Laps, 34 Miles / 55kms
    A4's will get a handicap
Prizes for 1st 6 over line, plus 1st 3 unplaced A4's and Ist Unplaced Junior

This promises to be a great event, hope to see you all there.

    Regards,

    Bax

I was going to do the A4 race, but now along with the A3, I am not too sure, A3's fast. No unplaced lady either.
Why unplaced junior and no unplaced lady?

EDIT: 55km is good though so I will try. Probably fail though.

    Hi Caroline,

We made the change to a combined A3/4 race this year as last year the A4's complained that 2 laps was too short. The problem is that we cannot run a separate 3 lap A4 race as there is a very real danger the A1/2 bunch would catch the A4's on the last lap (last year the A1/2's lapped 10mins quicker) this would lead to mayhem and would be dangerous so we decided to combine!

Fair point on the (lack) unplaced lady prize; in the name of equality between the sexes I will ask my race committee compatriots to add an UP lady prize - shouldn't be a problem.

The Committee has decided to hold separate A3 and A4 races given the size of recent turnouts at both A3 and A4 races (and the speed of the A4 races which seems to have increased). Both races will be 3 laps (60 km) with prizes for first 6 across the line.

    Hey guys,

Regular weekend cyclist here, the thought crossed my mind of joining a club this year, would love to try my hand at a race and see how bad I really am. Can manage over 30 kph handy enough on my own, but want to step up and see what I can do if I actually trained harder. Did the ATM with you guys last years, and though I struggled a bit on the hills, I made the first big food stop with the front group (bar the two or three lads who really went for it) with no major issues.

How quick are Cat 4 races? (estimate will do)

Do you need to have been training with the club since earlier in the year?

Not around the weekend mentioned above as I'm taking 250 of my mates on a spin to Galway, but would love to try one.

How do I get into it?

comparison won't work too well because of the group dynamic. The race last Saturday was 38kph.

One of the other boardsies I bumped into hadn't been on a bike in 6 months and got through it

    Hi there,
Glad to hear you enjoyed the ATM spin last year. It was a good day out for everyone with some challenging climbs thrown in.
The Cat 4 races average around 35 - 40kph. Distances can vary between 60 - 80km. So if you can manage over 30kph on your own, you should be fine.

I don't know what sort of bike handling skills you have or experience riding in groups but I guess you know racing is not like going for a club spin. It can be a very dangerous place to be if you are not used to riding at those speeds and in a group, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you have a certain amount of bike handling skills for your own safety and that of others, but it sounds like you have.

If you are looking to join a club, you are more than welcome at LCRC. We have riders at all levels and over the winter there are organized training spins every Sat and Sun. I'm not sure if those spins will continue now that the racing season has started. @Bax, can you confirm if they will continue ot not? Also, Lucan are part of a private league and races are held every Thursday night over the summer. It's a good place to start racing.

    Regards
    M.

    Hi M,

Yes club training spins for our leisure / sportive group is continuing uninterrupted throughout the summer. We will have as usual 2 experienced riders to lead the group on a roster basis. The spins leave @ 9.30am from Stagg Cycles in Lucan each Saturday. New riders can partake in one introductory spin, thereafter you must join the club for insurance purposes. (Membership fee covers basic CI insurance).

We take new members throughout the year, club membership is €50 and any rider who wishes to race in the league must take out a club competition licence as a min.

OP - If you want to ride the Lucan GP you will have to take out a one day licence, this is at a cost of €10 and race entry is also €10.

    Hope this helps.

So who's turning up to race on Saturday?

As an aside, there is a 4 man team from Lucan (including myself) who are racing RAAM this year. We are also using the event as an opportunity to raise some funds for Barnardos. In this regard we will be selling raffle tickets at sign on Saturday morning for a new bike draw - The bike is an Orbea Aqua T23, valued at €750.00.

Tickets are €10 if anyone wishes to support a good cause and be in contention for a nice new road bike!

Hope to see you all there.

Blackhall Gaels GFC is in the centre of Batterstown on the main Trim Road. This will be used for sign on and should not be too difficult to find. It is the only sports ground in the village.

Eh, OP didn't say that at all, he said, and I quote "Blackhall Gaels GAA Club" can't be any more specific than that dude, plus there is no soccer club in Batterstown afaik

Anyhow it's easy to find, head out the Trim road off the N3 and Batterstown is the 1st village you pass through, failing that follow the cars with bikes attached to them...

Must be a mistake or there were to Eoin McGoverns today in A3. He's a Dublin Wheeler. Was talking to him afterwards as well and he was saying that he got placed.

Eoin McGovern is with Dublin Wheelers not Usher as stated.

Thanks to the club for a well run race

Well done on your placing and thanks for the kind words. The club was delighted with how the day went. It is a great racing circuit and with the wind the way it was today it can be a tough one due to the wide open sections.
