Audio in MPC: Music + Sound but No Talking

    Hello All,

I'm having a problem with Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic.
Whenever I play a Matroska (.mkv) file recently there are subtitles and Sounds and Music but the Talking is EXTREMELY quiet. As in on full volume on my PC all I can hear is a dull muffle which sounds like its got loads of reverb.
I've been using Media Player Classic for files like this for years without any issue.
The only thing I can think of that might have started this problem is either 1) I was recently using a video convertor to convert .MOV files. or 2) I downloaded a japanese movie (Battle Royale) and after that I noticed the problem, even though the sound in that film was ok.
I've been trawling the internet looking for answers but cannot find any.
I've even uninstall my K Lite Codec pack and re-installed it (and as a result Media Player Classic)
    Can someone please help?

    Thanks
    Cormac

Try VLC before you go spending hours on a fix.

Uninstall all codecs and then try VLC again. VLC doesn't need codecs but it will make use of them if installed.

Tell us more about about your sound setup. (7.1, 5.1, 2.1, 2.0 channels ?)

Does it happen with ALL MKV videos?

So you've tried a variety (ones that definitely worked right?) of mkvs on two players and the speech is lower than the music?

It's a PC so check your connections first.

Could someone have messed around with the sound effects in Audio Manager? Reset everything in there anyway.

You mentioned that it may have started after a download so give Malwarebytes a go just to rule out dodgy stuff.

Try a system restore back to a time before problem started.

Sounds like you are listening to a 5.1 track but not getting the C channel.

On the software side of things I would check the settings in your sound card (Realtek HD audio manager etc, depending on card). Try resetting to default if you have made any changes. ALso check the Windows sound settings, see what device you are using etc.

On the hardware side I had a front-panel headphone jack failure which caused something similar. Some part of the jack broke or moved and I guess it caused a phase cancellation or something. Sounded pretty similar to what you are describing, dialogue was inaudible/muffled.

Fractal sent me a new jack which fixed it but it broke again the same way pretty quickly, just from plugging headphones in and out.

    Thanks guys, It's working again.
The speaker channels were messed around, there was 3 of them set to 0 for some reason.
    Much appreciate the advice
