Hey, I will be undertaking work experience next year as part of my business course.

Id obviously like if i could get a paid work experience and from talking to a friend he said it was hit and miss.

He personally got paid but others did not.

Is there any tips for what company's give me a better chance at paid work experience ?

To be honest almost 99% of them wont pay you.
I was in a similar position to yourself a few years ago.. I was doing a Law course and thought Id get paid for working in a solicitors office... I was definitely wrong... And nobody else in my year got paid either, bar one girl who done secretarial work for a charity and they paid her 100 per week.
I done other work experience aswell.. childcare and beauty therapy... and neither work experience sessions i done were paid.
If you get a genuine thank you and a good reference from the employer id be more than happy.
    Best of luck though :)

Ive just been researching a bit and seems like a lot of the financials seem to pay on the internships.

Look for an internship in any of the big 4 accountancy firms they all pay around 1500 a month after tax to interns, some pay for overtime and others give you time in lieu for overtime. I am in E&Y Dublin until september and they are actively recruiting, on the first day we were told we will have a choice to take a contract for 3.5 years after college based on getting a 2.1 degree. E&Y are taking on 250 graduates over the next 2 years and you will be first in the cue if you already had an internship here. Also a lovely place to work very friendly enviroment. There were 25 interns starting when I started in January.

How do you think il cope not been from an accountancy discipline ? Il be planning on doing the economics & finance stream or management stream.

Did many of your co workers come from a non accounting related stream ?

Well I work in corporate tax and everything has to be learned from scratch, you are kinda thrown in at the deep end but everyone is very open to helping you learn. Overall I dont think it would be a major problem.

The majority of people do come from an accounting, finance or economics background but one of the girls that started with me did neuroscience as her undergrad in Trinity so it is open to anyone.
