Hey, i know there has been alot of threads about this in the past, but i would like to know the low down on CS & IT in Nuig :)
ie. How many hours can i expect in first year?
Is honours maths necessary to do well and to understand the maths part of the course
and finally is the maths difficult?

You'll get through maths if ya work at it.. You can choose pass which most people do as there isn't too much of a point in doing honours.
I got through first year sound and I did pass for the leaving.

Am I reading that wrong or is it really 34 hours a week? Or is that divided between two groups? Interested in this course too :)

I'm 99% sure it's not 34 hours a week(haven't taken the actual course but have a lot of classes with CS & IT). One of the lads actually doing the course will probably see this soon and give you a better answer ;)

Here's a realistic version of what you'll be facing:

Not quite 34 hours but still a fairly heavy week. The tutorials are optional so I haven't highlighted them, and the physics labs on Thursdays are only on every second week.

Nope, you'll only have half of those labs (they're split 50/50 between the class, as it's too big for one lab room).

It's actually a bit less than that. I'm a first year now and my timetable looks like this. And it's actually a bit less in semester 1 where Electronic Engineering has no labs.

Are those hours considered to be long hours compared to other courses?
And is the work placement in third year paid ?

People make a big deal about weekly hours. It really doesn't matter in the end. IT happens to be more hours in terms of lectures/labs than, say, Arts. But Arts get a *lot* more assignments/written work.

Ah i see, so it kinda balances out then ?:)

It all boils down to this - if you are interested in the field and want a job 4 years from now, do computer science.

Honestly, if you're deciding on a course based on how many hours you have in a week, then I think you need to re-evaluate your decision to go to university.

Didn't mean it to come across like that, i want to do this course, was just wondering what the timetable would be like/how many hours i should be expecting.

Anybody else got any input on this course? Do you like it ?
    Would you recommend it ?

If you want to shoot me a PM with any questions you have, I'd be happy to answer, as I do for anyone else who asks about the course. Just bear in mind that I have exams at the moment and until the 22nd, so I might not be able to answer until then :)

Yeah it's possible. Not a fun way to do it though but if circumstances require it, getting up at 9 to do assignments, working the college say and working evenings is perfectly possible.

Just keep up do date on your assignments and dont skive off tutorials. tutorials are more important than lectures imho.

a lot of the modules don't take attendance so if you can work from online notes and just get to labs and tutorials you'd probably manage like that.
