Do insurance companies in the north insure people in the south? Has anyone had experience with this? Is it cheaper? What companies offer it if any at all??

Generally, No. If you do so you will need to state your a permanent NI resident and when your car is nicked from Galway and your address is meant to be Belfast you could be left answering some questions which could lead you into hot water.
