Could other parts of the Digital Dividend exist with Analogue TV, with no Digital TV?

What do you mean by other parts of the Digital Dividend? At the moment the digital dividend in Ireland refers to a slice of spectrum between 790-862 MHz i.e. the top end of the terrestrial TV spectrum reclaimed following the replanning of the old analogue TV spectrum for DTT.

What is currently available on that slice of the spectrum whats it used for? No broadcast related part of the Digital Dividend.

    790-862 MHz = UHF Chs 61-69.

    Digital Dividend - http://www.comreg.ie/_fileupload/publications/ComReg1059.pdf

Chs 61-68 is currently used for analogue TV, DTT will use 21-60 (except 38). According to Comreg, Ch 60 will only be used for DTT if absolutely necessary and is not planned for the first 6 muxes, to be mainly used as an 8 MHz guard band between broadcast and mobile frequencies.

Ch 69 is currently used for PMSE (Programme Making and Special Events) - wireless microphones, in-ear equipment etc., will be moving to Ch 38.

Could ATT use UFH channels 21-60 plus VHF channels (if not in use)? Meaning moving channels around on ATT.

Yes as they do now but come the early hours of the 24th Oct next all analogue broadcasting, UHF and VHF, will be switched off.
I don't normally post outside of the "Queries for SAORVIEW" sticky thread, but I would like to comment on this discussion. I can say with 100% certainty that all analogue terrestrial television in the Republic of Ireland, VHF and UHF, will switch off on October 24th this year. There is no consideration being given in RTÉ or RTÉ NL, to any extension on that date, for any reason.

    Regards,

    SAORVIEW Brian.

That is fine I am talking hypothetically. In a situation without DTT in its current form, BTW it may not be up to RTÉ and RTÉ NL, but that is OTT.

So for example RTÉ One and Two air on VHF singal, TV3 and TG4 within the broadcast range as used currently for DTT. Could the other uses of the "Digital Dividend" be rolled out?

Yes they could in areas of the country where the relevant channels are currently unused (hypothetically).

Also, mainly due to no Commercial DTT - Almost all RTE 1 and 2 analogue TV transmitters and many (even considering the cases of DTT moving onto TV3/TG4 analogue channels to improve coverage) TV3 and TG4 analogue transmitters could actually stay on air if the digital dividend spectrum was totally cleared of TV!

If you're saying, hypothetically, could the digital dividend be rolled out and coexist with analogue VHF & UHF only broadcasting, couldn't see why not but it would require replanning to clear analogue broadcasting from that part of the spectrum and the necessary technical coexistance planning to be carried out.

Of course that won't happen as the digital dividend has been planned to coexist with DTT and is only being made available Europe wide following ASO and the clearence of DTT from that part of the spectrum.

The ASO date is the responsibility of the Dept of Communications as per the Broadcasting Act/Communications Regulation Act who directs Comreg to withdraw the analogue broadcasting licences on a particular date. But of course they don't decide alone as they are all part of the Dept's DSO Steering Group.

OTT but DSO Steering Group work as much as they can together as a Cow and a Donkey do (best methophor I can come up with).

So the answer is yes, by moving ATT to VHF and DTT UHF spectrum, the other Dividends could occur without DTT. Anyway just wanted to know. Thanks for all your help.

It can't. 4 to 5 National 8 MHz allocations including Analogue needs all the TV channels.

Originally these were on Ch 35 before the launch of Channel 5 (in the UK) and TV3 (In Ireland) forced them up to 69.

Now theyre being forced to move again this time down to 38

Spectrum "planning" -dont you just love it !
