Is there a release date for Tivo-Like service on UPC as of yet, I've heard from engineers that this is to be rolled out shortly....

    Any truth in that??

Ah the classic UPC line "well have it shortly"!

Im not sure what their plan for an on demand service is; I dont think Ive read anything to say its going to be any time soon anyway.

Personally Id sooner see them spend their time on something useful like increasing their frankly pathetic lineup of HD channels before they go looking at an on demand service.

An increase in HD channels is an absolute must - the inclusion of Sky Sports HD would be a major coup for this provider, in fairness though Sky won't let them have it - & rightfully so imo.

On demand service is already available on UPC in the Netherlands & other European countries via UPC......

I'd be very interested in this if they can finally nail down a good network for my area, I'm currently waiting on them to fix an overhead wiring issue that has stopped me from getting fibre broadband into my home....

    Here's hoping eh

UPC's big problem with offering an on-demand service is their absolute lack of content of their own to offer on such a service. They'd need to do deals with third parties to offer their content (and you can be pretty sure Sky will be in no hurry to be one of these).

You have to remember when comparing Sky to UPC in this area that Sky is both a content play and a carriage play, Sky has twenty-odd branded channels and stakes in a few more to populate its service before it ever deals with anyone else. UPC has, well, the Info TV channel. In what must one of the most bizzare aspects of the Irish broadcasting market, Liberty Media, parent of UPC, owns a company which has a range of English langauge television channels (the Zone and CBS-branded channels). These channels are exclusively available in the Republic of Ireland on...Sky.
