Apps and settings, changing from HTC to Samsung

    Hi all,

    Hope this hasn't been asked before,
    I'm changing from a HTC desire S to a Galaxy S2.
    What should I do to transfer apps and settings etc?
    On settings/privacy menu on the HTC the box is checked to keep data backed up on google account.
    I'm on meteor and they told me it couldn't be done and that I'd have to download all the apps and settings etc again.
    Surely there's a way around this?

    When I changed phones I installed SMS Backup +. This allows you to backup / restore your SMS messages to Gmail. So you can backup all your SMS messages to your Gmail account and restore them on your new phone.

    Your contacts should be synchronised with Gmail already so you shouldn't need to worry about that. Same for your Gmail. If you're using another email provider you'll need to investigate that yourself.

    All apps are listed in your Market account. So if you register the new phone with your same email account when you log onto Market you can go to My Android Apps to see all of the apps you installed. So you can just click on the ones you want and press install and they'll install on your new phone with their default settings.

    Before changing phones plug the old one in to your USB port and just backup the contents to your PC. Just in case. I like to have it in case there's some document or mp3 that I forgot about.

    App settings, or game saves will be lost so when you reinstall apps you'll have to configure them again. That's a bit annoying. You can get around that by rooting but I can't be bothered.

    It doesn't take long. I've a pile of apps and by going through the stuff above I could change my phone in less than an hour.

    Only apps that are purchased. Free Apps are not.

    Get "Appbrain App Market," you can setup an account on that and it'll sync up with all the apps you have. So when you setup a new phone it'll list them and you can install them all together by "importing" the list.

    Go to market.android.com then click on My Android Apps over on the right.
    If you go to your Google Wallet account it only shows your purchased apps in there.

    Got a new phone recently and logged into the android market app. Free apps weren't listed there under My Apps, only what had been purchased.

    Mickoneill suggested you log into market.android.com on a full browser (eg desktop) - that'll show you all the apps you ever downloaded. You can then send them to the phone from there (assuming your phone is online).
