I believe you would each be entitled to 202.90.

Ye will both get the personal rate €188 and half rate for children.

Yup. €202.90 each, until second baby born.

Most of it is taxed, but tax is only deducted if you have income from another source. They just reduce your tax credits to take account of it. It shouldn't affect you if you're both not working.

If anything, you'll probably be owed tax as your husband will have been paying tax while he's working based on his wages, so if his income drops, his tax liability will also drop.

As other posters have said, you should get the full rate of 188 for yourself, and between the two of you, you will be able to claim for the children. Once your Jobseekers Benefit runs out (presumably in June) then you will have to be means tested for Jobseekers Allowance. When this happens, you should look at the figures, in some cases you're better being added to his Illness Benefit claim, but it will depend on your precise circumstances then.

If you're on Jobseekers payment at this stage, you might want to consider looking at Back to Education Allowance or some other employment scheme that will allow you to keep your full payment after June. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/back_to_education/back_to_education_allowance.html

If your husband returns to work, and your income is still low, consider whether he might benefit from applying for Family Income Supplement http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/social_welfare_payments/social_welfare_payments_to_families_and_children/family_income_supplement.html

Sorry for bringing up old thread but I am in the exact same position myself. The replies answered some of my questions but one more. If you are on illness benefit long term can you get rent allowance. We were rejected for the housing list some months back as we were €20 over the allowed weekly income. As this has changed, should we re-apply?

If your weekly income has decreased you should apply again. Of course your local council's income thresholds may also have changed, but they'll let you know soon enough if you don't qualify.
