Grand Scenic, Catalytic Converter

    Hi,

So my grand scenic (04 1.4 Peterol) dies on idle and judders at low revs. My mechanic friend suspects that the catalytic converter is hosed. He can't be sure though because the fecking sliding console is stuck and is covering the port for the computer.

Does anyone know a place near Dundrum where I could get that tested and possibly replaced?

    Thanks!

Unless the cat was blocked then it wouldn't cause the car to cut out. Cat failures are also, almost always, a symptom of another problem, usually excess fuel in the exhaust system. If your scenic is petrol, then a failed coilpack is common.

Funny you should mention that, I read somewhere else that a coil pack could have failed. Does that mean that the converter is permanently broken too? :(

Is it down on power when you accelerate. i.e, if you put your foot hard down do you get a spluttering/hesitation etc?

Once the cat is gone, its gone unfortunately, which is unfortunate since it cost of replacing the cat could be 10 times the cost of a coilpack.

Diagnosing a coil problem on its own can be done without plugging in a computer but you will need access to the ecu to erase faults and diagnose the cat etc.

All the time or only when engine is cold? If it's only when cold then it might be that the throttle housing just needs to be given a clean, had similar issure on 05 megane but only when engine was cold

All the time, when I was driving it over to my friends house it either died at the lights, or I did some fancy throttling/handbrake work to keep it alive

I seem to remember accelerating to catch green lights when I drove it to my friends house. On high revs it worked ok.

How can I check the coil?
