Is it the Dairy farmer who is the real benificary of the rise in Beef Prices. He is selling a by product of his industry and at present they are selling on average for 140 euro more than last year.

The average Dairy farmer after keeping his fresian heifers will have an excess of 75% of the calves born. Selling at present at 140 euro more than last year so 140 muliplied by 0.77 is 105 euro per cow milking 5500 litres which is equal to 1.9 cent a litre and he is getting it paid at start of production year

Also I imagine that dairy bred calves are 50% of the factory in take

Agreed, suckler farmer selling top quality export weanlings has not benefited, but suckler weanlings of av quality are worth more too.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

agreed also, but the export job is as steady a income in the beef side of things as you will get,you know in general what your income will be from the great cattle at sale day,and our rubbish depends on the meat factories, which as we all know has been great the last 6 months.out of all this shortage of beef how come it has not gone up in italy asit has here, because italy always has shortfall in numbers and irish farmers could always have the same prices as italy if they kept control of cattle numbers in the country.factories are still makeing money at these prices and they are paying a average 200-350 euro head more for cattle to the farmer and yet there is no huge increase in price to the consumer that we hear about.

Funny, but I sold a few BB weanling heifers last autumn and got a good price for them. They weren't over muscley. I've been watching their numbers on www.daff.ie to see if they were exported. Not yet anyway.
I would have been happier if they were, at least I'd know if I was achieving the grade rather than they being bought by some farmer for breeding. I would be more likely to get these prices in the future with the export trade than the crazy Irish one.

Sorry it's the department of agriculture website, www.agfood.ie
Do a Profile for the Herd and find the cow of the heifer you sold. Under the heifer tag number, there should be a Status. It will be blank if still alive in Ireland, Exp for exported or Dead.
