Tips for Renting old Cottages

Not sure if this is the right place for this but in case prospective renters are looking at old cottages (like our last venture with 2 Seaview Cottage) some heads up tips. Old cottages are

    i) Unlikely to have damp seal under floor (plastic sheet), resulting in damp on walls of house. Pull up edge of carpet to check, or ask renter, get their promise in writing.
ii) Unlikely to have insulation in roof, you need to check each room.
iii) Likely to have solid stone walls - difficult to heat - ask renter
iv) Likely to have crap windows
    v) Likely to have inadequate ventilation (carbon monox). This includes a bunged up chimney - check with paper fire
vi) Unlikely to have great plumbing - run shower and taps at same time (not sure about this one but we didn't do it and were stung with terrible water pressure)

Do not move into an old cottage with no damp seal. Any of the first four means you're in a good position to garden as your heating bills will be +50%.
