Commuter car question

This might seem like a stupid question but is there any point in buying a car with high mileage (100k miles +) for commuting potentially around 400 miles a week?

I need to buy a car for work but only have about a €2000-3000 budget. Any thoughts on the efficiency and longevity of buying say a more comfortable car like a 2001 1.4 VW Golf with over 100k miles but in good condition vs. a less comfortable, smaller but newer car like a Micra or a Polo with less mileage?

    Any help appreciated.

I'd take a micra over a 1.4 golf to be honest. They're not the car they are cracked up to be.

Judge a car on its condition. If you have a raggy 100k miles car thats been abused and never looked after, walk away from it. If you have a clean, cared for +100k miles car, go for it. Most modern cars can comfortably sail past the 100,000 miles mark no problems.

Well a golf 1.4 with over 100k is likely to be a massive minefield.

As above, go on condition and service record rather then just mileage.

With 400 miles a week why not look for something with a diesel engine?

............... for commuting potentially around 400 miles a week?

I need to buy a car for work but only have about a €2000-3000 budget...............

Peugeot 406HDi, Citroen C5 HDi, Rover 75 diesel, I wouldn't bother looking at VW/Audi stuff as they are typically grossly overpriced.

I was recently quite close to moving house and work etc and doing 30k + miles per annum, I'd have been looking at the likes of that 406 and would have been very confident of finding a good one that would have proved reliable, comfy and frugal.

400 miles a week in a Micra would be pretty soul destroying too...

There is a few 01's about. Not many, given that it was the run out year for them. C5 took over heavily from then.
