Been renting for six months in the last year but only 5 recently and 1 early last year (in fact I was renting for 3 years prior to that but its only the last 12 months they care about). I have no proof of the earlier time and can't get through to my old landlord.

Will I need to get proof and how can I get it? It was in another county.

Also, I may have to leave the house I am currently renting because I have got behind on the bills and need to use the deposit to pay for them. I am on a full time Fas course but so far I haven't got rent allowance because I was scraping by on the 180.

If I move will I be able to claim rent allowance? I will be thinking of staying on a friends couch for a few weeks until I can save up enough for a deposit. I let things get bad because I thought I would get paid work by now.

I would say go to your local welfare officer and bring proof of you living abroad and what work you did there? Bring proof where you are living now(if you cant prove the accommodation you lived in most recent wouldnt Fas have that info for you? But if you cant that would mean you are homeless in their eyes and have to help.Tell your welfare officer your case and take it from there with them. They will be able to advise you on how to go about getting rent allowance with fas course.
Best of luck sorry to hear things are bad at moment but keep the hope.I wish you best of luck.
In all other cases, a person who wishes to apply for Rent Supplement will be referred, in the first instance, for an assessment of eligibility for social housing support by the local housing authority in the area where claim to Rent Supplement is made (and the person intends to reside). Only when the person has been assessed as being eligible for and in need of social housing support, does the person become eligible for consideration for Rent Supplement.

Rent Supplement is not payable while a housing needs assessment is being undertaken. Some limited exceptions may apply.

have you got receipts of payment to landlord, if not, you had better be locating him, they want a paper trail, so landlord is best chance, did you deal in bank in the area you moved to, were your statements from bank addressed to houses you stayed in. it is all about a paper trail

Just apply to the local authority for social housing.
The CWO will probably insist you do it anyway.
