Linux and the wifi network

I know there's few Linux users on the forum so I thought I'd post my problem.

Today I got my new laptop running Ubuntu set up on the UCC wifi network. The web browsers Firefox and Chrome work grand (if quite slow?), but no other programs I have can use the internet. For example, Ubuntu Software Centre and Update Manager don't work. The people inside the computer centre aren't too acquainted with Linux, though one guy said that the network might just block some kinds of programs.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

Haven't used my laptop here recently and don't remember if Updates and Apps worked tbh. This link may be helpful although our proxy doesn't use authentication.

Another thing is make sure to use these proxy settings rather than any of the auto-config urls and make sure you have pressed the apply system wide button in Network settings:

    Host: 10.255.255.10
    Port: 8080

The problem is probably the apps not picking up / not using global proxy settings. Also obviously they could be attempting to use some port other than 80 and 443 which are the only ports available.

my ubuntu works fine. what type of programs are you having trouble with?

i know there is an extra proxy step needed to get the browser to work. if your browser is working then you have the correct settings and will need to input them into the other programs i would assume.

i do know there's at least 2 students working there who are GREAT with linux, maybe ask for them?

Really annoying they only allow you to use http ports. They advertise "student wireless internet access" when really it is "student wireless web access". I want to ftp and ssh without using a lame web workaround. I guess the majority of students are just happy to browse Facebook all day with their computers...

If you were really that bothered you could setup a VPN or an SSH server on a VPS running on port 443 then tunnel everything that way. They allow both TCP and UDP on 443. I've heard this can work quite well.

I have it set up using SOCKS but it's still annoying... maybe I'm just annoyed easily. I don't think they allow raw TCP/UDP on 443 though, only https. Haven't tested it though.
