Former IFA President has been jailed for the non payment of a €200 fine he received in connection with last years general election. He was fined €200 after he refused to remove electronic road signs erected without permission. I say well done to the authorities for clamping down on this, it will serve as a reminder to others than they cannot get away with shenanigans like this
The former president of the IFA, John Dillon, has been imprisoned for not paying a €200 fine which was imposed on him at Newcastle West Court last year.
Dillon was prosecuted by Limerick County Council after he failed to remove electronic road signs which he had erected without permission, during last year’s General Election campaign.
He was arrested at his home in Pallasgreen shortly before 11am today and brought to Limerick Prison to serve the eight day sentence, which was imposed by Judge Mary O’Halloran, who also ordered that he should pay the costs of Limerick County Council.

    His statement to media
Dillon says jail term “outrageous abuse of power”

Ahead of his removal to prison for refusal to pay a fine and massive expenses relating to his use of display advertisements during last year’s general election, former IFA President John Dillon issued the following statement:

“The electronic display signs which I used in last year's general election were used by candidates in several constituencies, some of whom ran for political parties, and yet I find myself singled out for this outrageous sentence.

The fact is that in Limerick, the county council have decided that it is an offence under the law to irritate their preferred party candidates. I am going to jail today because I annoyed the wrong people.

I am going to jail proudly because maybe it will take something like this for people to wake up and see that in todays Ireland, it's one rule for the political cronies and another rule for anybody who stands against them.

People know this already. They see junior ministers getting €17,000 a year extra for going to a meeting, and then they see politicians declaring that the man who put up a few environmentally friendly electronic posters, and who even offered to move them is being sent to jail.

I will defend my right to free speech and my right to campaign within the limits of the electoral acts. I did not seek nor did I invite this outrageous abuse of power, but I will suffer it gladly if it shows people what an absolute joke the law has become, and how dangerously vindictive the political classes are.

Let there be no doubt – I will survive prison. But part of our freedom as a people did not survive this charade, and if it is allowed go unpunished, people will find that I am not the last person who has his rights trampled by this nasty and crony-riddled political class”.

Fair play. That lad was a pure cowboy. He thought he could use bullyboy tactics to avoid following the law like the rest of us.
