    Hi there,
My Mac wont update from 10.6 unfort, so was on to apple and they say I have to give it to an apple service provider to help me get it up to date.
He gave me a list of places in Dublin to bring it to but which one would you recommend for me??
    Cheers

    Not Mactivate.

CompuB in Dublin are *okay* and a colleague in work said Evad IT were okay when he had a problem with his iPad home button.

    Hi Colonel

What was the problem with Mactivate? I was thinking of using them as they are close to where I live.

I'd be interested to hearing about any problems with them before I do so.

Feel free to PM me if you prefer….

    Cheers

Why can't you update the Mac yourself? What model is it and what do you want to do?

It just wont let me update from 10.6 to anything higher. It's a 2007/8 Macbook pro.

I cannot update to anything higher than this, dont have the app store and cant install some programs cause they need the higher osx.

Has anyone ever dealt with BOndi Group by any chance? Apparently meant to be good??

I've worked with Bondigroup in the past and would recommend them for sure.
Am I correct in saying you cant upgrade 10.6 to 10.6.x?

Are you saying Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will not install on this Mac? App store is also a free update for 10.6 or later. Newer apps may not run on your Mac due to video limitations on motherboard and you cant upgrade that.

    Which Mac is it?

Big difference between Mactivate and bondigroup in distance and expertise. - bondi group aren't and authorized service provider but Mactivate, Compu b and Evad are. Bondigroup are not a group that I am aware of more like a one man band. Which s fine along as he is available... Compu b are the biggest company and as such do the most service, Looking around the forums considering they are nationwide they do have a good service. As for evad, it is very hit and miss.

What happens when you use Software Update? Do any updates show up at all?

    Definitely not mactivate...
I sent my Imac off to them to replace the hard drive under warranty from apple.
Didnt pick it up on the day they said they would and didnt drop it back on time.
Driver didnt ask for or provide a box for the machine, put it under his arm with his car keys also in the same hand.
Came back with the screen not put back properly (was running off to the side)
Also hard dirt under it and the aluminium on the back was all scratched.
I reported them to apple and got a brand new 2011 machine...
    Would never use them again.

Yes, but only the likes of i tunes and printer updates come up. I install them but not sure If they actually doing anything. Even in iTunes when I want to visit the store, iTunes tells me I need a newer version of safari to use it, I try update safari and that dosnt work either, so I still think I'm on an old iTunes also, not sure. So it seems nothing is updating for me really!

    Okay, check something for me:

Go to Apple menu > About this Mac, and click on where it says Version 10.6.0. It will show the build number. What is it?

I suspect your problem is being caused by a problem with a system file on your hard drive. You need to repair it.

Easiest way is to start up in single user mode ( keep the 'apple' and 'S' keys pressed during power up). If you are successful you will see a text based display. Wait for the text to stop scrolling. Type sbin/fsck -f at the command prompt. This will run a disk check. See does it repair anything. When the test is complete type logout or exit to boot into OS X.

Log in and go to the disk utility app and run the repair disk permissions option under first aid.

Now try running the 10.6.8 update combo.

OP was unknowingly running a pre-release build of SL. Updates won't work. Installing a retail copy SL will fix it.

Just as well it's solved. A couple of years ago, I was in Mactivate (Warranty recovering of a MB) and somebody rang asking for a price to install 10.6. The bemused receptionist, after asking the caller why they didn't want to do it themselves, got a price for said job and broke the good news....

€60 per hour+VAT+one copy of 10.6 for the bench time required.

The punter booked it in, FWIW
