brake fluid change

    just had this done on saturday,how long should it take for the pressure to build up,i would have thought after a short bit of driving,but the pedal still seems spongey and goes down further than it used to.and other times it gets a bit harder like the pressure has built up but doesnt last long.

    I suspect you have an air pocket somewhere. Are you 100% sure you purged the brake lines of air. Your brake pressure should be up as soon as you pump the pedal after your have closed up the bleed nipples.
    Also make sure you have no leaks, even the most minute of holes can cause a spongy pedal and loss of fluid.

    Did you get new pads at the same time? If so, there will be a bit of bedding in required. If you just got the fluid alone done, then there is something wrong so take it back to whoever done it. With fresh fluid, you should immediately have a pedal at least as good as before the work.
    I would suggest air in the system or it has been known that a master cylinder could be damaged when bleeding - depending on how the work was carried out.

    If the pedal is spongy it sounds like it wasn't bled properly. If it was me and my car I'd try bleeding the brakes again to see if that solves it.

    If nothing else was done to your braking system other the the fluid change then your pedal should feel the same, if not better, then before.

    Pretty much that.
    Put in new rear discs and pads on her MX5, ruined a caliper, so had to exchange that too, bled all four corners profusely to get as much old, crap fluid out as possible whilst topping up the reservoir each time.
    If anything the pedal felt a lot harder afterwards, there wasn't as much travel, brake response was much improved all round.
    If it still feels spongy and has a lot of travel, there's something amiss. System needs to be bled again, check all four brake hoses and the rest of the system for leaks, it should be firm and responsive.

    What kind of car is it? Was the fluid changed by a garage?

    Yup. New pads and disks and/or brake fluid change will leave a good firm pedal.

    If pads were changed but not disks then the brakes can be soft for a while until the pads bed in to the old disks.

    hi all ,thanks for thew comments.yea i was done by a garage its an old 94 honda.this morning on the way to work it felt alot better and the pedal doenst feel as spongey.so ill see how that goes for the next day .
    and i guess the best thing to do would be go back to the garage if it doesnt feel right again.

    With a car of that age you should be sure that they fully inspected all the brake lines, steel and rubber, for wear,corrosion,perishing,bulging etc.

    Keep an eye on your brake fluid level to be certain you don't have a leak.

    Don't be putting it off either. Last time you want to discover something like that is in traffic or going downhill.

    thanks lads ,will check that this eve and then keep an eye on it .
    looking at getting those braided brake lines dont think itl be easy with my car.anyone know how to tell what size or which ones will fit ? maybe mine do need to be changed at this stage.

    Have a look a HEL brake lines, they do braided lines for pretty much every car.
