I hope this is the correct place to ask this.

I am buying my first ever car in Ireland. I have my eye on a 2005 Nisssan. I want my mechanic to give it a full check out before I make an offer. He says to have one of the lads in the dealership drop the car out to him, and he'll have a look at it. He says if the dealers refuse to do this that is a bad sign of their trustworthiness, they may have something to hide about the car, and to walk away. I have spoken to 3 dealers so far, and they all say no dice, he has to come to them and use their bay/machinery/tools for the inspection. The cars are not allowed off the premises for off site inspections, as God knows what may be done to them, or stolen from them when they are gone. So who is right and who is wrong here? Which practice would be the norm? I can see both points of view to be honest.

The car I am buying is near the Red Cow Inn and the mechanic is in Artane. If my guy is willing to make the trip out there, what would be a reasonable rate for him to charge me to drive out there and do the inspection? Would it be a flat rate charge or would he charge by the hour including his time on the road?

Also, I do not have have a full Irish drivers license. I have a full US one and and an Irish leaner permit. Will this be a problem getting to do a test drive?

    Thanks.
