I was with eircom where my home number was "private" ex directory and recently changed our phone to UPC. Is it possible for UPC to put the home number ex directory?, as when I dial out our number shows.

Did you ring them and ask them?

I think it is possible but not sure how. Might be possible to go to LiveChat here and ask there.

Yes, but you have to ring UPC and ask.

When I was gettong set up they said there was a difference between ex directory and private number so just check. I went ex directory, but not a private number.

Whether your number is private or not, you can override the setting on a once-off basis by dialling the following prefix before the number...

141 hides your number regardless of whether you are ex-directory/private or not

142 reveals your number regardless of whether you are ex-directory/private or not

The 'reveal' option is useful if, for example, your landline is ex-directory and you're dialling the mobile phone of a family member and you want the person to see that it's someone calling from home.

It's also worth checking Eircom Online Phonebook http://www.eircomphonebook.ie/ as UPC give them your number whether you're ex-directory or not.

They gave Eircom my number and despite my ringing them on 13 Feb this year to have it removed, it's still there. They say it will take another 40 days to remove.

So check for yours too...

That's a personal choice if you chose to answer it. Most of my family show up as "private number" so I do answer the call.

I dont tend to answer private numbers tbh; most people I know would be the same.

If people are in your phonebook, then their numbers should show up when they call you. The fact that they don't is down to the outdated system this country has regarding telecommunications.

Anyone here calling outside Ireland have their phone number showing as simply "International call" for the person called, for the reason above.

Celtic Tiger was just a pussycat.

Unless you have their number stored twice in your phonebook e.g. as 'Mary Murphy' and 'Murphy, Mary' - in 99% of cases this is why a caller's name doesn't display.

Complete BS. The major operators in Ireland are using the same GSM/3G h/w and s/w that is used in other European countries.

Not true. I lived in England and anyone in my phonebook calling me showed up under the name they were stored as, except Irish callers. They just showed up as "International Number", even though they were in my phonebook.

Callers from other European countries and further afield showed as their stored name.

Were the Irish numbers in your phone book stored as international numbers (+35345x) or as local Irish numbers (045x)? Ive never had any issue with Irish callers displaying on my phone; whether Im in Ireland or abroad. The system we use in Ireland is the same as the UK.

They were stored as international numbers as I had to have the code when calling them.
But I have a brother and sister living in The Netherlands and the USA, and their names always showed....

Incidentally, my aunt in London has the same problem with callers from here. She's always trying to tell them to leave a voicemail if she's out as there's no caller ID.
