Car Hire - adding a non-present driver

I'll be hiring a car in Berlin for the Euros in June. I haven't picked a car hire company yet though as still looking for best deal.

An issue that has arisen is that one of the group will be joining us in Poland so won't be present when we hire the car. Has anyone any experience of adding an additional driver to the car hire policy without that person being present? Is one company better than another in this regard? Would a photocopy of their license suffice or would we need the actual license?

If it comes to it it's not too much hassle that he doesn't drive but it would be better if all 4 of us were on the policy.

I doubt if they will be happy with a photocopy. Perhaps if you rent from a major company, Hertz etc, your friend could go along to one of their other offices in Poland either beforehand or with you when you reach there.

Also as you are renting in Berlin check that you are permitted to take the car out of Germany.

I am not saying that it will work in Germany but my dad has been adding me on rented cars with a colour photocopy in Spain for years. Nobody has every questioned it. He has even told people it is a copy and they have never said no.

Save yourself money and buy a car hire excess policy online. You can add drivers on to this policy. But you will need to bring a copy of the validation cert to confirm you have a policy in place.

As far as I know you can add a certain amount of additional drivers based on terms and conditions.

Thanks for all that, will check out the excess policy.

Am fairly certain all the companies I was looking at allow you to bring the car to Poland (not Ukraine though won't be going there so no problem), that's good thinking about bringing my mate to the office in Poznan if we go with Hertz/Avis etc.

indeed, but make sure to mention you are going to Poland as some wont allow even a VW bora or polo into the east block.
They will need to allocate you a fiat or skoda or the likes instead
