Plenty of Android tablet nerds here if Bargain Alerts is anything to go by, so I feel I should leverage all that knowledge. :)

Looking for a midrange tablet suitable for a mammy, around €200. Basic computer literacy so simplicity and usability a priority. A /reasonable/ turn of speed and storage to futureproof for 2-3 years would be nice. 3G not a major requirement, it's unlikely to leave the house.

I'm sure I'm missing some points, just let me know what and I'll update.

EDIT: Android 2.3 minimum. 10" asking too much?

Does it have to be android? The blackberry playbook is a great device which can run many android apps. Normally 500 euro but on sale at 219 in pcworld. Simple to use. 16gb and dual core 1ghz processor. 7inch screen though. Wifi.

Android 2.3 is muck on a tablet.
Get something that can run 3.0, or at least something with a decent honeycomb hack like Vegacomb for the Advent Vega (or clone).

I think I'd prefer to stock with something running android proper tbh.

I realise 2.3 isn't ideal but I get the impression that anything running 3.0 will be over budget. I mean I'll stretch to 250, but I really can't go beyond that.

    Thanks for the replies.

I would be really interested in what somebody with a bit of expertise comes up with here I'm in the same boat as the OP on the same type of budget but would add the proviso that the tablet must have full android app market. If anyone can advise it would be greatly appreciated. Also what would the benefit of 3G be??

having 3G isn't essential if you can tether (connect your phone and use it's data to let the tablet connect to the net) but if you cant tether because of the package and you use the tablet away from wifi zones then you can buy a bill or pre pay data allowance from the network and use the sim inside the tablet to access the internet (3G tablet).

Most decent tablets will be in and around 500 euro. The budget ones are budget for a reason. Archos make a lot of budget tablets. There's also the amazon kindle fire. But again most of these are 7 inches in size.

They're usually single cores and therefore multitasking wouldn't be as nice as with a dual core.

I can recommend the Arnova 10G2. Had it since Christmas and very happy with it. There is lots of support and ROMs that have improved the performance of the tablet hugely on http://www.freaktab.com/

That model does look good but it doesn't have the full android market and that would be a must for me.

I'm not exactly very tech savvy would this be very dificult to do also does it void the warranty??

You have to flash a new ROM on the tablet. The instructions that they give are clear. You should read through the forum to see how other people fared and decide whether you want to give it a try. From what I have read it is easy to go back to the original ROM if needed, so shouldn't be a problem with warranty. Some people are having some problems in the last few days getting full Market setup and it might be due to Google making changes but I am sure a way around it will be found.

Going to have a look at a few tablets in Carphone Warehouse on Friday, see how the 7s/8s compare to the 10s. I like what I hear about Archos, might go that route.

Went for a 101 G9 in the end btw, the 1GHz version. Little over budget and I'd buy the newer one if it was for me, but this'll do fine for a granny. Thanks for the help.

If it hasn't already got it installed, ICS is now available for the G9s
