    00 vw passat 1.6.
hi guys, my bro bought himself a passat and there`s a few things wrong with it. he only paid 900 euro for it so its nothing spectacular, but the one thing that stands out is when its started from cold, say first thing in the morning, it cuts out until it warms up then it ticks over ok. the next thing is a knocking from the driver side wheel ( mainly when turning). would i be right in saying the MAF meter is gone and it needs a new wheel bearing driver side??
    any suggestions is appreciated, thanks
    john

The suspension knock could be a variety of things but a common issues is with the top strut link balljoints being worn causing a knock, jack the wheel up and give it a shake at the 12 and 6 o clock positions and have somebody place a hand on the various suspension components to check their security.
The idle issue cold again be a variety of problems, but MAF issues 1) usually affect the whole engine load range regardless of temperature and 2) may illuminate an EML or log a fault code. Best foot forward would be to get it to a decent mechanic who could check live data from the likes of coolant temperature sensor, fuel filter and the basics.

Thanks azureauto ill pass on the advice. There's no EML light but I suppose that doesn't mean there's no fault codes. As for the knocking I'll have a quick check the way you described and go from there.

The coolant temp sensor seems to be a common fault on these, cheap and relatively easy to replace. Need to get the o-ring with the CTS, and some people decide to buy a retaining clip in case they drop/break the old one.

Knocking is probably the cv joint.
