Anyone know whether there is a remote on/off switch for a domestic central heating unit?
If there is, could you point me in the direction of a suitable heating person to supply and fit same?

No, I want to be able to remain sitting on my butt and turn on the heating without crossing the room......yes, I am that lazy.:p

Don't think so. The Siemens programmable room stats come with a table stand you could have beside you in a living room or something, there around €90 I think.

Would a big long stick work:D

Check out the Heatmiser range, should have something for you. They do remote control thermostates all the way up to full web enabled touch screen systems, I have two of their remote control touch thermostats. Dogs B****x. Only thing is this of course depends on the time clock a TM4 from Heatmiser being on but it is damn handy being able to turn up the temp form bed or the Sofa :D The setup I have, a TM4 with Touch thermostates would be considered their low end of the range.

You can apparently get a system with a gsm module now so you can get an app to turn it on and off using your phone

    Buy a cap.
Place on head and remove as needed

My brother has one using his alarm to activate the on off on the heating. It also works certain lights.

As said above it uses relays and GSM kits. and off course you will need to have your mobile phone in reach.

If this all seems a little expensive you can buy wireless program controls from people like chromotherm. However these will have to be mounted in a place of your choosing as they are sensitive to large vibration from moving around.(They have to re scan for the signal)

As said above Heatmiser do controls with a remote control but I don't see the need for able bodied individuals! I install controls, etc., and in my opinion if you have a programmable room thermostat set at the correct temperature there should be no need to turn your heating on and off - the controls will look after it for you. (And save you money in the process!). I have my controls at home set for my comfort temperature when I am home and never have to touch them unless I decide to go out or go to bed early in which case I am already on my feet and just touch a button to adjust.
It would probably help to say where you are so that installers local to you on the forum might be able to point you in the right direction!!

    First question: yes.
    Second question: yes.

Remote controls are available in any DIY shop, Argos, sometimes Lidl and Aldi have them.
    Any consumer can install these.
The receiver is placed between the electric power suply (socket) and the electric power consumer (boiler).
The sender is placed into the palm.
Read the manual, most of these devices operate at up to 2.500 Watts, check the signal distance.

    Strange answers you hear here.....

There is a unit you can purchase from electrical wholesalers that is a switched receiver with a sim card. So you can basically send the unit a text from your mobile phone to switch on. The mobile phone can be located conveniently on the arm of your arm chair that you are so reluctant to remove yourself from.

Probems with above post: pump and fan overrun to dissipate heat on low water content gas boilers and frost protection on gas and oil boilers, other than that fantastic idea;)

My alarm does this via x10 accessible via any web browser. If the remote control is too far away, my mobile won't be.
